Merging Primary and Secondary Schools in Singapore

In Singapore, the primary and secondary schools merger for the next three years has been finalised. The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the union on Wednesday, April 6.

The proposed change was first mentioned a year ago in response to the decreasing birth rates. This was also the perceived answer to the ever-changing demographics of housing estates.

"[The act offers] a vibrant learning experience with a good range of educational programmes and co-curricular activities," stated the MOE.

The List of Announced Primary and Secondary Schools Mergers

The Sets of Merging Primary and Secondary Schools

As they commemorate its 96th anniversary, Telok Kurau Primary School decides to keep its name despite its merger with Eunos Primary School. The following year, the unified school will be situated at the current location of Telok Kurau Primary School on Bedok Reservoir Road.

Elsewhere, Farrer Park Primary School also intends to retain its original name for its merger with Stamford Primary School. With that said, the future site will be at the current address of Farrer Park Primary in 2023. Before this soon-to-be merger, a union between Boon Keng and May Primary Schools resulted in the formation of Farrer Park Primary in 2002.

In 2023, the merger of Guangyang and Townsville Primary Schools resolves to keep the latter's original name. Naturally, the future Townsville Primary School will be found at the same address along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

Meanwhile, a new Bedok Green Secondary School will be the result of the institution's merger with Ping Yi Secondary. The school also decides to retain its name because it will remain in the same location at Bedok North.

Overall, you can expect the abovementioned schools to be found in the location of their kept names. This decision is alleged to have been finalised due to the agreed location of the merged institutions.

Differently Named Institutions in the Primary and Secondary Schools Merger

Unlike the schools we mentioned earlier, some institutions will not follow the original name of the school in the new location. This decision can be linked to a possible agreement between the committees of the schools involved.

The new Chua Chu Kang Secondary School got its name from the Chua Chu Kang Secondary and Teck Whye Secondary Schools merger. However, it will be located at Teck Whye Secondary School's current address.

This also applies to the soon-to-be new Greenridge Secondary School that merged with Fajar Secondary School. You can find its new location by dropping by Fajar Secondary School's present site.

The Factors Involved in the Unification of Primary and Secondary Schools

"A range of factors were considered, including the schools’ history and heritage, enrolment, final site of the merged schools, as well as stakeholders’ interests and the sentiments of the schools involved," stated MOE officials.

Following the announcement of merging institutions, MOE revealed that they were involved in the finalised school names. For best results, representatives considered each location's background and story. During negotiations, the officials involved also had to consider the space and convenience of the merged schools.

"The history and heritage of both schools will be documented in a dedicated space in the merged school," said MOE representatives.

MOE officials vow to closely monitor the unifications for the next three years. All mergers aim to resolve the rapid decrease in birth rates in the country.

"MOE will continue to work closely with the schools to ensure a smooth transition for all students and staff, and in the process, forge a strong identity for the merged schools."
