Next month, IMH (Institue of Mental Health) and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) company Science Arts will be carrying out the the first-ever local Singapore study of TCM for kids with ADHD.

The six-month study aims to measure how effective TCM herbal remedy is for ADHD, and potentially develop it as an alternative to other treatments. Psychiatrists will use established Western measures to assess children’s behaviour, while TCM practitioners will administer Eastern herbal-extract capsules called yi shen ke li. Some of the herbs in this extract capsule include danshen, dates, gancao, and fulin.

There is very little scientific information about the effectiveness of TCM for kids with ADHD, and so thus any data from this observational study will help researchers said the study’s lead psychiatrist, Dr Ong Say How.
