Vivian Lee and Alvin Tay, both 23 and from Malaysia have posted erotic pictures and even an intimate video on a sex blog chronicling details of their sex lives.
The blog also known as Sumptuous Erotica has seen been taken down by the couple due to the backlash they have faced, however the couple remain unrepentant.
According to Vivian, the pictures on the blog were a work of art and not something pornographic. She adds, “We are open-minded people and we just want to share this with the world. We want them to see how pretty it was.”
Open minded or crass?
Vivian feels that there is nothing wrong talking about or having sex and it is a normal thing between two consenting adults and that is what they want to show the world especially the more conservative Asian society. She is unable to understand the negative response from the public saying, “There should not be any stigma when a couple wants to talk or be frank about this. I cannot understand why this has to be blown out of proportion and sensationalised.”
Innocent motivations?
According to a statement by Vivian, the blog posts were not done for commercial purposes and that it was simply for fun and to showcase their love. She continues, “When we started the blog in September, we got a small following, mostly from Westerners. But three weeks into the postings and after more pictures and videos were uploaded, Singaporean and Malaysian Internet users got wind of it, and in less than two days, the site went viral, followed by exposure by the Singapore media.”
Her boyfriend on the other hand Alvin Tay wants to get leverage from all the media attention. He says, “This is a critical period, and we intend to use this time to build a following. Perhaps we won’t do videos and such anymore for public consumption, but we could be bloggers or endorsers. We want Alvin and Vivian to become a household name, a pair known for being a sexually open duo,”
No regrets
The couple seem to be relishing in the attention that the cyber furore has caused. Alvin Tay has even gone to say that he has absolutely no regrets about the sex blog he shared with Lee and that they will continue having a lot of sex, and recording it too. Vivian was more concerned about the impact this has had on her parents who have been caught up in the following media frenzy, she has appealed to the media to leave her parents alone as they are not involved. Vivian goes on to say, “I don’t care about what people think or say about me or their perception of who I am. I don’t care if men stare or ogle when I am out in public. Neither am I embarrassed for being the girl in the erotic pictures and videos.”
Yet this incident is not an anomaly in today’s technologically advanced and sexually mature society. We share some reasons why posting sexually suggestive pictures online is not the best idea for anyone.
1. It can be misappropriated
Heard of identity theft? Well there are people out there who can use your picture to sell products or services without your permission. They have even been cases of people photoshopping victim’s faces onto nude bodies and these have gone on to appear in pornographic sites.
2. What goes on social networking sites such as Facebook never really get deleted
Always be careful what you say or post on Facebook as they never really get deleted. Remember that ultimately the internet and social networking sites are public spheres despite all their privacy policies. So it is better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to your own children.
3. It might come back to haunt you
More companies and school boards are doing online background checks on its applicants and photos of youthful antics or suggestive poses might affect their impression of you and your eligibility for the job.
