She had hoped that he would re-think his decision to get a second wife.

But on that night, in the bedroom of their Punggol flat, Nur Fairuzana Ahmad caught her husband exchanging audio messages with his lover, saying “I love you”.

All hell broke loose.

Singapore mum stabbed her husband

She had known all along that he was having an affair. According to Today, her husband, Muhammad Yasser Abdul Shukor, had confessed about his lover from the Philippines, and his intention to take her as his second wife.

Fairuzana had decided to stay with her husband, hoping that he would change his mind. The couple had after all, been married for 14 years, and have two children.

But hearing her hubby and his lover exchange love notes that night was too much for her to handle. In a fit of rage, Fairuzana snatched his phone from Yasser. Yasser managed to get his phone back after a struggle and pushed her onto the bed.

Fairuzana then left the room, only to return with a knife.

She began shouting at Yasser before stabbing him in the chest. She stabbed him on the right side of his chest and pulled the knife out.

Yasser reacted by grabbing her hand, causing Fairuzana to drop her knife. He then threw the knife out the window and called the police.

He lodged a police report saying his wife had stabbed him and he was “bleeding badly”.

According to Channel NewsAsia, Yasser suffered a stab wound above his right nipple, and the attack injured his diaphragm and liver.

Fairuzana was arrested and sent to the Institute of Mental Health, where she was diagnosed with adjustment disorder.

History of physical and emotional abuse

The case is now in court, and on September 14, Fairuzana was convicted of one charge of causing hurt.

The prosecution has sought a jail term of at least two months, for causing serious injury to her husband.

But the defence brought to light murky details of Fairuzana and Yasser's marriage, and requested for Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO) with probation instead.

The defence revealed that Fairuzana was a victim of physical and emotional abuse.

Apparently, she had suffered abuse throughout her 14 years of marriage. In 2004, shortly after the birth of their first child, Yasser had allegedly beaten up Fairuzana with a billiard cue so badly, she was unable to walk.

On another occasion, he had cut off her hair to shame her.

Things got so bad that Fairuzana was forced to obtain a Personal Protection Order against him in 2012. His violent conduct however, continued to persist.

In the three months leading up to the stabbing incident, she had complained to police thrice about her husband's violent behaviour. It seems, Yasser had once attacked his wife by sitting on her and choking her.

Defence lawyer Vigneesh Nainar has been quoted by Yahoo News Singapore as saying, “Her marriage to her husband was a tumultuous one where she endured both physical and emotional abuse throughout."

"Adultery, attempted suicide, violent beatings and constant taunting are just a few things that she had suffered in the years and weeks prior to the… night of 17 April.”

It has been revealed that Fairuzana has moved out of the matrimonial home now and is now seeking divorce. She now lives with her parents. Yasser lives at his home with his fiancee.

The couple’s children are now being looked after by Yasser’s mother, though Fairuzana has been granted unsupervised access to them.

Netizens have come out in support of Fairuzana. They wondered why she had not left her husband earlier. "Idiotic cruel husband. He should be jailed for abusing her", read one comment.

Many questioned why the husband never got punished, "Yasser should be charged for mentally torturing his wife. His action proved he asked for it and plus his long term physical abuse to his wife for more than 10 years."

Fairuzana, who is out on bail, is expected to be sentenced on Oct 16. The verdict is awaited.
