As parents, it’s our responsibility to ensure that we present ourselves as good role models for our kids. But what do we do when it’s other adults around us that are exhibiting signs of bad parents?
When we do encounter someone being rude or misbehaving, it should not only come as a bad example for our kids but for us as well. With the recent news of a driver trying to push back a security officer with his car, here are some signs of bad behaviour from Singaporean parents that we do NOT want to be like.
Driver Pushes Back Security With Car At Red Swastika School Entrance

On Tuesday (11 January), a video was circulating online of a white Bentley car being stopped from entering Red Swastika School in Bedok.
The driver can then be seen inching forward several times and pushing against the security officer standing in front of the vehicle. While he tries to stop the vehicle from moving, the driver continues to move it forward and push him back.
The authorities released a statement that evening saying they have been alerted about the incident and that investigations are ongoing.
The incident has not only displeased netizens but has even sparked criticism from the Union of Security Employees (USE) and the Security Association of Singapore.
USE writes in a Facebook post how they are aware of the incident “involving a motorist threatening to run over a school security officer”. The union adds, “USE condemns this act of aggression against our officers and will work with the authorities for action to be taken against the motorist to protect the interests of our officers.”
USE also reports that the security officer identified as Mr Neo Ah Whatt has suffered slight injuries and is now recovering at home. The school will be extending help to him as well.
Education Minister Chan Chun Sing also spoke up about the incident and uploaded his own statement on Facebook. In his post he writes, “This is unacceptable behaviour. This is not the way we should behave towards our security and school personnel who are performing their duties to keep our schools and our children safe.”
“As adults we should set a positive example for our children in how we treat others with respect, and abide by the rules that are in place for the collective security of our school community,” Mr Chan adds.
He has also given an update from the Singapore Police Force saying they have arrested the driver for a “rash act causing hurt”.

The Road Traffic (Pedestrian Crossings) Rule clearly states that no one is allowed to stand, sit, squat, loiter, walk or run on the road. Pedestrians should instead use footpaths and other walkways available as much as possible.
But it seems like this man didn’t get the memo as he decided to leisurely stroll along Upper East Coast Road. What horrified netizens was how he was also pushing a baby pram in front of him.
While he appeared to be unbothered by the moving vehicles passing by, the man did eventually raise his middle finger when a car honked its horn at him.
The man is not only setting himself up for potential danger but his child as well. Raising your middle finger despite being in the wrong isn’t exactly a good example for the kids either.
Parents look on as daughter dashes across the street alone

Parents can get distracted or be preoccupied with other things just like any human. But if you see your little one running across the road without any supervision, you would expect at least a bit of panic coming out.
As seen in dashcam footage of a vehicle turning into Seah Street, a couple appeared unconcerned when their daughter dashes across the road ahead of them. The footage catches the mother trailing behind her daughter with a suitcase while looking on from the walkway
Drivers travelling on both sides of the street were thankfully more alert and managed to stop in time to avoid running over the child. When the little girl suddenly made a U-turn to run back across the road, one of the drivers had to sound their horn in a warning.
This finally caught the couple’s attention and make them realise the danger their daughter was in. The mum then beckoned her daughter over while the dad ran up to check on the child.
On that note, parents, do remember that children under the age of 10 still need supervision when crossing roads.
Let us do our best to showcase respectful behaviour and abide by the rules. As children do tend to copy what their parents do, it is best to ensure that we exhibit a positive example for them.
