A plan to head out for supper after work on Wednesday (March 10) night became a harrowing experience for a group of young kid.

Sharing the ordeal in an Instagram post, one of them wrote that they had just stepped out of Dominos Pizza at Tampines Ave 4 when three men approached them.

The trio then asked them if they knew someone named Hafiz or belonged to a gang.

As one of the youths answered them, the men grabbed and punched him, and then slashed his neck with a broken beer bottle.

Unable to react in time, the victim fell to the ground.

His friends tried to stop the bleeding as they asked passers-by for help to alert the police and call for an ambulance.

It was a close shave for the teen as the slashes missed the aorta, the victim’s father told Lianhe Wanbao.

The teen sustained two gashes measuring 5cm and 3cm on his chin and collarbone which required him to undergo surgery.

In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the police said they were alerted to a fight at Block 802 Tampines Avenue 4 at 8.40pm on March 10, and subsequently arrested two men aged 57 and 60 for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon with common intention.

Besides the pair, the police arrested another 39-year-old man for public nuisance in relation to the case.

The injured youth and the 57-year-old man were both taken to Changi General Hospital by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Safety Advice When Faced With An Attacker

While not every attack is the same and each culprit may have different motives, it’s important to keep in mind a few basic safety tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:

1. Remember to stay calm. If you panic, you won’t be able to focus on the situation. So take a deep breathe and try to assess the situation you’re in and how you can get out safely.

2. Put yourself first over your belongings. If the attacker asks for money or any of your other belongings, just hand it over and run in the opposite direction. You can always replace whatever you lost rather than losing your own life.

3. Learning self-defence would be very beneficial. When the situation arises, you can fight back if the attacker tries to hurt you or whoever you’re with.

4. Try to find ways to call for help discreetly. Without your attacker noticing, try to reach for your phone and call the police or any of your emergency contacts. It would also be helpful to have your own personal safety alarm.
