A miscarriage research breakthrough could benefit thousands of women who suffer from multiple miscarriages even after getting treatment.
What the study says
The scientists at the Warwick University, UK, concluded that a lack of stem cells in the womb lining is actually the real cause of a miscarriage. After finding the cause the scientists would now start researching for a treatment that could prevent a miscarriage.
Here’s what lead author of the research, Professor of obstetrics and gynaecology Jan Brosens, had to say to the media, “We have discovered that the lining of the womb in the recurrent miscarriage patients we studied is already defective before pregnancy. I can envisage we will be able to correct these defects before the patient tries to achieve another pregnancy. In fact, this may be the only way to really prevent miscarriages in these cases.”
Co-author of the study Siobhan Quenby, Warwick University professor of obstetrics and honorary consultant at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, said, “The real challenge now is to develop strategies to increase the function of stem cells in the womb lining. We will start piloting new interventions to improve the lining of the womb in the spring of 2016.”
Surviving a miscarriage
Previous studies have found that Indian women are more likely to have miscarriages as compared to those of other ethnicities. A study which collated the findings from five cities was published in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of India.
Of the 2,400 women who participated in the study, 32 percent had suffered spontaneous miscarriage. Globally, this figure is presumed to stand at 10 percent. India’s poor show on the pregnancy report card can be attributed to a history of infections in women’s uterus the report concluded.

Here are four tips for women dealing with a miscarriage.
- Think of ways to de-stress: After the loss, the woman must be encouraged to relax her mind by employing physical activities such as exercising, painting, dance or any such activity that she may enjoy.
- Turn to meditation: Practicing meditation and yoga on a daily basis can increase blood flow and reduces anxiety attacks. Specific asanas such as boat and the bridge pose focus on healing the womb and help strengthen it.
- Pop a multivitamin: The woman can start consuming multivitamins based on doctor’s prescription such as folic acid, three months before trying for another conception. However, always consult a doctor before doing that.
- Let it heal: Most experts recommend that couples should wait for a minimum of three months before they try for another baby. This cooling-off period gives the mother’s body strength to be ready for another pregnancy.
