The eggs are believed to symbolize “fertility and a renewal of life.” Their rounded shape is traditionally associated with harmony and unity. Red is used to dye the eggs because it represents happiness and good luck.

Besides red eggs, ginger bulbs are another important food element used on this day. Ginger bulbs are important because they are believed to provide yang or hotness to the nutritional needs of the new mother and are considered to be healthy.

Red egg and ginger parties can be held at home or at a Chinese restaurant. Guests who have been invited to a Red Egg and Ginger party usually give a hong bao, in return they are given some red eggs to take home.
