Sharing a meal and good conversation is one of the great things to come home to after a long, exhausting day.
Mums over on theAsianparent Community—a new Q&A platform and digital comment for parents—are opening up about what they usually talk about with their spouses or partners over dinner.
The discussion began when user Dazzle N. asked:
“Aside from how your day went and the kids, what you do you discuss at the dinner table with your spouse?”
“Sometimes we talk about boring things like the news. Complain about some silly rules that we’ve heard,” wrote Hui Q. in response. “Sometimes we discuss holiday plans or what activities we hope (hope being the keyword) to do. Mostly any random stuff that popped into our heads.”
“Since we’re still young and internet freaks, we sometimes talk about viral things of the day.”
For Jorelle A., her conversation at the dinner table are focused mainly on their past—specifically, their whirlwind romance—and taking time to sit down and share a proper meal allows them this chance.
“We talk about a lot of things like the news and since we’re still young and internet freaks, we sometimes talk about viral things of the day,” shares Febby A. “You know, like meme, videos, or some hashtag and laugh about it together. And depends on the day, we discuss plans. Like on Wednesday night, we usually talk about what we’ll do on the weekend so when the weekend comes we don’t waste our time to arrange a plan anymore.”
As for Janine M., dinner mostly happens in front of the television. “And while watching the news, we react to certain topics be it about current events, lifestyle, sports, entertainment and sometimes even commercials,” she wrote. “I recall once, we almost had a petty argument about commercials on alcoholic beverages. I pointed out why most of the time, sexy women are always associated with these types of commercials. He said there’s nothing wrong with it. From intellectual topics down to the silly ones, we just never run out of ideas to share with each other.”

Chiran D. and her husband’s favourite dinner table discussion revolves around the future—particularly, when their next big trip will be. “We discuss about our future plans be it our careers, finance, new movies that we don’t wanna miss, new restaurants we want to try, upcoming social visits and the list goes on!”
Karina L. shares: “My partner is an entrepreneur by heart, so often we discuss the potential ideas or what other start ups or our friends are doing. It’s quite an informative discussion. And yes, we talk about other usual stuff, about upcoming movies, friends we recently got in touch with, ongoing news, our families, weekend plans or sometimes we just sit quietly and enjoy our dinner with each other.”
“We also pick up a debate just for the heck of it and enjoy the argument.”
Nazneen B. gets a bit more candid, writing that she and her hubby discuss office gossip and nosy neighbours as well as planning trips. “We also pick up a debate just for the heck of it and enjoy the argument.”
“Every day is a different day at the dinner table,” writes Chetna J. “Sometimes, we discuss his future prospects in is job, and what should I do apart from being a stay at home mum. Should I study again, or take up some language course? At times, we discuss some relative, and the discussion goes haywire, and reach to his family, my family and we end up arguing at the dinner table. And there are times when we talk about travel plans, recipes, business idea that we would work upon. And sometimes just random stuff about some video, movie, a song that he has seen or I have.”
It doesn’t have to be life-changing conversations every night. What’s most important is spending time to communicate even if it’s just about the random or mundane—focusing and listening to one another strengthens your bond with your spouse.
