Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is all set to make a special appearance at the Singapore Polo Club on August 12, 2023, to participate in the Sentebale IPS Handa Polo Cup. The event promises to be a thrilling showcase of the sport of polo, blending equestrian finesse with hockey-like excitement.

Supporting Sentebale’s Charitable Cause

The Sentebale IPS Handa Polo Cup is an annual charity event that aims to raise funds for Sentebale, an organization co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006. Essentially, Sentebale’s mission is to support children and young people affected by poverty, inequality, and HIV/AIDS in southern Africa, particularly in Lesotho, a sovereign enclave in South Africa.

This year, the event is expected to generate significant contributions for Sentebale’s work, with over £11 million (S$18.8 million) being raised in the past. Consequently, the funds will be utilized to bolster the organization’s Clubs and Camps programs, which provide crucial psychosocial support to young people living with HIV.

Prince Harry’s Appreciation for the Polo Community

Prince Harry expressed his gratitude to the polo community and sponsors in a statement released by Sentebale. Additionally, he also expressed his delight at returning to the prestigious Singapore Polo Club, where the event will take place.

This won’t be Prince Harry’s first time visiting Singapore for a noble cause. Back in 2017, he graced the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup, marking his commitment to championing charitable initiatives in the region.

During his visit, Prince Harry had the opportunity to break fast with the local Muslim community at Jamiyah Singapore. Additionally, he engaged in conversations with Singaporean youth mentors from the Community Health Assessment Team about the significance of mental health.

Polo: Hockey on Horseback

The uninitiated often describe polo as “hockey on horseback.” It is an ancient sport that originated in Persia and has gained immense popularity worldwide. Teams on horseback compete to score goals using mallets and a small ball. The sport requires immense skill, coordination, and teamwork from both horse and rider, making it a spectacle worth witnessing.
