What is anemia?

Blood contains hemoglobin in its red blood cells. These cells help transport oxygen throughout the body. A loss of blood or a fall in the cell count of the blood diminish the oxygen carrying capacity of blood and therefore reduce the amount of oxygen that the organs receive through it. Such a condition is called anemia.

During pregnancy, there are great chances of suffering from anemia. The body goes through a myriad of changes due to which the blood volume in the body increases.

This increase is estimated to be around 50% of the existing blood volume. With the surge of blood in the body, the concentration of the red blood cells is diluted to a large extent.

In certain cases, there may be blood loss during delivery. Such  loss of blood may also induce anemia.
