Step Up for Learning Differences: 24-Hour Charity Walk to Support Inclusive Education (from October 4-5, 2024)

The Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) is gearing up to host a unique charity event, “Step Up for Learning Differences – Walk with Roy” (STEP UP 2024), aimed at raising awareness for students with learning differences and funding the DAS Bursary Fund. This 24-hour walking challenge will span from 6:00 pm on 4 October to 6:00 pm on 5 October 2024 and promises to be a remarkable event for a noble cause.

An Inspiring Challenge to Raise Awareness

The walk will start at the DAS Jurong Point Learning Centre and finish at the DAS Toa Payoh Learning Centre, covering 90 kilometres and all 13 DAS Learning Centres across Singapore. Roy, a dedicated Facilities Management Officer at DAS, will lead the charge on this journey. Joining him at the starting point will be Member of Parliament, Mr. Patrick Tay, who will flag off the event at 6:00 pm on 4 October. The event will culminate with a welcoming ceremony by Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, at the Toa Payoh Learning Centre.

Stepping Towards Inclusivity

Roy’s walk is more than a physical challenge; it’s a testament to the power of inclusivity and the importance of supporting students with learning differences, such as dyslexia. Roy’s step symbolizes a step closer to a world where education is accessible to all, regardless of their unique learning needs.

The event is open to individuals and groups, with various ways to get involved. Participants can join Roy at any point of his walk, cheer him on at the start or finish lines, or take part by walking at their own pace and submitting proof of their activity by 31 January 2025. The proceeds from the registration fees, set at $30 for individuals and $120 for a group of five, will go directly to the DAS Bursary Fund, which provides financial aid to students from low-income families who require support with their education.

A Cause That Transcends the Walk

The walking event serves as a prelude to another key fundraiser, the DAS Charity Golf & Dinner 2024, set for 11 October. These events highlight DAS’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusive education and supporting students with learning differences.

Ms. Jane Ittogi, who will serve as the guest of honour at the golf event, emphasizes the need for continued support and understanding for children with learning challenges. Through these initiatives, DAS aims to foster a society where every child, regardless of their learning difficulties, has access to the tools and resources they need to thrive.

Get Involved

The event is a call to action for everyone to make a difference, whether by participating in the walk, donating, or simply spreading the word about the importance of inclusive education. Your involvement can help transform lives and ensure that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed in school and beyond.
