A six-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after he got a small object stuck in his ear, which reportedly turned out to be a pebble.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (18 September), the boy's father Mr Liew claimed that the incident occurred during a visit to an indoor playground.

Mr Liew reportedly took his son to a local indoor playground that has the usual play areas for kids and includes toys, a mini play kitchen, and a soft artificial sandpit.

While playing at the sandpit, a pebble ended up stuck inside his son's ear.

Seemingly unable to remove it by himself, the father had to take his son to KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) to have the foreign object stuck in his ear removed.

"It went in to my 6 years old son's ear, end up spent [a] thousand at KKH to take out the pebble. First and last visit for me," Mr Liew wrote in his post.

Keeping Kids Safe At Indoor Playgrounds

Let us continue to make playgrounds a safe space for our kids to explore and have fun. As more indoor playgrounds become popular islandwide, let's do our part in ensuring our children's safety by keeping in mind the following safety tips:

1. Inspect the area for any hazards before letting your child play.

We shouldn't immediately rule out every playground as completely safe and make it a habit to double-check for any potential dangers such as unanchored equipment and damaged structures.

2. Practice good personal hygiene.

This is essential especially given the current situation. Make sure the indoor playgrounds you choose are sanitised properly every day.

3. Dress for safe play.

Avoid having your child wear clothes that could get them caught in any structures such as laces or loose drawstrings.

4. Always have a pair of eyes monitoring your child.

When there are instances where you aren't able to look after your child, ensure you have someone else supervise them while playing, such as your spouse or nanny.

5. Discuss these safety tips with your child as well.

Teach your child ways they can take care of themselves while playing and how they should always play safely with their peers. For instance, they should remember to wait their turn when going up ladders and/or to not push anyone while playing.
