In May 2017, pregnant mummy Goh Chieh Ting was struck by a lorry in Jurong West. Following the accident, she was rushed to the Ng Teng Fong Hospital emergency department in a desperate bid to save her life, as well as that of the baby she was carrying.

Goh was just 25 years old and 26 weeks pregnant at the time. Our hearts broke when we found out the young mother lost her battle to survive.

A mother’s love will always protect her baby…

They say every cloud has a silver lining. In the case of this young mum, her silver lining shining bright right now, is her baby girl Yunice.

That’s right – the skilled medical professionals of Ng Teng Fong Hospital managed to deliver the baby girl at just 26 weeks into her mummy’s pregnancy.

A statement issued by Ng Teng Fong Hospital said: “The team made the swift decision to perform a perimortem caesarean section to increase the mother’s chance of survival, but unfortunately she succumbed to serious injuries.

“A concurrent team took over the pre-term baby and continued to resuscitate the baby, performing manual ventilation continuously, while making the emergency transfer to the National University Hospital (NUH), where she was received by the neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team for immediate attention.”

A father’s gratitude to Ng Teng Fong Hospital staff

Baby Yunice’s father Mr Dave Yuen was only able to carry his little girl (still very much pre-term) after a two-month-long stay in Ng Teng Fong Hospital’s NICU. The tiny baby had to stay for a whole five months in the hospital before she could go home, says a Channel NewsAsia report.

Mr Yuen, meanwhile, is immensely grateful to Ng Teng Fong Hospital and its staff, and he expressed his heartfelt thanks in a video last Saturday (Jan 27).

In it, the 26-year-old proud daddy says that with his daughter finally home, “Every movement she (makes), her just looking at you, makes you feel happy. She brings in the positive vibe at home, not just for me, but for my in-laws, parents and siblings.”

He also says, “On behalf of my family, I would like to thank the [Ng Teng Fong] medical team for giving me a miracle, giving me hope…”

Little Yunice is now an eight-month-old, happy, healthy baby. We wish her and her proud dad all the very best in life.
