There are many childbirth stories that happened in the unlikeliest of places, made memorable by the circumstances in which they occurred. This one however is one for the books.
A mother not only gives birth in a moving train, but in the process her newborn slips down the toilet, falls onto the tracks outside and miraculously survives.
According to the Times of India report, a woman on board a train Bhojipura railway station gave birth to her baby girl inside the lavatory.
The passengers on board the 52204 Tankapur Izzat Nagar train became aware of the woman’s situation after she began crying for help, and quickly sprung into action.
“On reaching her, they found her bleeding profusely, frantically asking for the train to be stopped,” the report said.
“Within minutes, passengers pulled the alarm chain and brought the train to a halt. Fellow travellers soon ran towards the baby and found that she was alive.”
The concerned passengers then hopped off the train and ran after the fallen child.
After the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel were alerted of the situation, both the mother and child were rushed to a nearby primary health centre (PHC).
“It is a miracle that the newborn girl, after falling on concrete boulders of the track from such a height, survived,” said divisional railway manager Chandra Mohan Jindal.
“The GRP and fellow passengers did a commendable job by immediately rushing both the mother and the child to hospital.”
Investigation on the incident revealed that mother Pushpa Devi—resident of Mohan Nagar Bhagatpur of Kanchanpur district in Nepal—were traveling to Bareilly for an eye check-up.
During the journey, however, she experienced labour pains and immediately went into labor.
Pushpa Devi also told police that she had her husband had left her and that she had been working odd jobs in her neighbourhood to support herself.
News of the incident quickly spread locally, and as a result, many showed their interest in the baby itself and even expressed their desire to adopt her.
