The itty-bitty socks, the adorable toys…awww.

Choosing all the bits and pieces for your new baby is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for his arrival. Here’s a checklist of the mum-approved essentials and fun extras you’ll need to make your newborn’s first year healthy, happy and as stress-free as possible.

The basics

Cot: Updated safety guidelines in the US now prohibit the sale of drop-side cots, so it essential for your baby’s safety that you purchase a new cot. Make sure the slats in your baby cot are no more than 6 cm apart and that all the joints and parts fit together tightly. If you have a cot that was made before June 2011, find out if the manufacturer offers an attachment to prevent the drop-side from moving.

Car seat: It is illegal for any child under three to travel in a vehicle without a car seat, so this is definitely a newborn essential, even from day one on the way home from the hospital. Babies and toddlers under three should travel in a rear-facing seat, which will help support your little one’s neck, head, and spine in the event of a crash.

Clothing and accessories: Newborns don’t need much in the fashion department, but there are a few must-haves. You can never have enough baby grows and onesies in size 0-3 months. It’s also a good idea to stock up on receiving blankets that double as burping cloths and changing pads. And when it comes to baby sleeping bags, hats and socks, let’s just say you can never have too many.

Plastic bottles and teats: Get hold of plenty of 4-ounce bottles for your newborn, and 8-ounce bottles for when he gets bigger. The safest bottles are made from glass or certified BPA-free plastic.

Changing station with Pampers nappies and wipes: You’ll change a whopping 3,000 nappies in your baby’s first year alone, so a sturdy changing table is a must. Look for one with a 2-inch raised guardrail on all four sides. Make your life easier by stocking it with plenty of good-quality nappies and baby wipes.

Thermometer: Rectal thermometers will give the most accurate readings, but forehead thermometers and thermometers that go under your baby’s arm or in her ear also get the job done. Whichever kind you choose, make sure it’s digital: Mercury thermometers are dangerous, as they can lead to accidental mercury exposure or poisoning.

The extras

Front carrier: Wearing your baby is a cuddly way to keep him close while you go about your day. It can also help comfort him when he’s grizzly, and it might even boost his brain development. Slings and more structured carriers are equally good, as long as your baby’s head is supported.

Pushchair: There are countless options, and the pushchair you buy should suit your lifestyle. (for instance, if you’re a runner, a jogging stroller could be a nice choice.) Whichever kind you go for, make sure it has a seat belt and harness, easy-to-use brakes, and a wide base that won’t topple over.

Baby swing: In a matter of minutes, the soothing rocking motion of a baby swing can turn your crying baby into a happy, sleepy one. And that’s music to a new mum’s ears.

Cool mist humidifier: One of these in your baby’s nursery will help him breathe easier when he gets a cold. To prevent the growth of bacteria, empty the humidifier when it’s not in use. Clean it regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Baby bath: A large plastic baby bath makes life easy, but for newborns, the kitchen sink works just as well. Just make sure that the taps aren’t in the way and the dishwasher is turned off.

Having a new baby can be a bit overwhelming, but if you keep to this newborn essentials checklist you’ll be more than prepared.
