Choosing all the bits and pieces for your new baby is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for his arrival. Here’s a checklist of the mum-approved essentials and fun extras you’ll need to make your newborn’s first year healthy, happy and as stress-free as possible.
The basics
Cot: Updated safety guidelines in the US now prohibit the sale of drop-side cots, so it essential for your baby’s safety that you purchase a new cot. Make sure the slats in your baby cot are no more than 6 cm apart and that all the joints and parts fit together tightly. If you have a cot that was made before June 2011, find out if the manufacturer offers an attachment to prevent the drop-side from moving.
Car seat: It is illegal for any child under three to travel in a vehicle without a car seat, so this is definitely a newborn essential, even from day one on the way home from the hospital. Babies and toddlers under three should travel in a rear-facing seat, which will help support your little one’s neck, head, and spine in the event of a crash.

Baby bath: A large plastic baby bath makes life easy, but for newborns, the kitchen sink works just as well. Just make sure that the taps aren’t in the way and the dishwasher is turned off.
