When we hear the word “jelly,” the first words that come to our minds are probably “soft,” “jiggly,” and “cute.” But mum Lisa Connor wouldn’t use any of these words to describe what her daughter Esme’s jelly sandals did to her tiny feet.
According to a Daily Mail report, Esme received the pair of pink jelly sandals for her birthday. On the outside, it looks just like any other jelly sandals on the market, but no one knew that it would cause massive bruising and could cut her skin.
“Esmé was in absolute agony. I couldn’t believe it because she had only been wearing them for half an hour,” said her mum Lisa. “It’s not like she was running around in them for hours. She was just plodding around the house and then came running in in tears.”
Lisa admitted that new shoes will rub, but what had happened to her daughter was “ridiculous.”
“There was so much blood and she wouldn’t stop crying,” she said. “Her dad had to spend an hour calming her down. It spoiled her birthday weekend really.”
The most frustrating thing about the ordeal, however, was that Esme wasn’t able to communicate her discomfort properly because she couldn’t yet talk straight; Lisa initially thought that her daughter was simply tired.
According to the Daily Mail report, Lisa already got in touch with Next, the company that manufactures the jelly sandals, who agreed to examine the pair Esme was given.
However, she thinks that they should be taken off sale before any more children get hurt.
“The sandals are made from a jelly material so I don’t know if that’s what’s caused the problem. The worst cut is just under her ankle bone,” she added. “I’m really disappointed because I do all my clothes shopping at Next, but I don’t think they should be selling these at all.
Now, the distraught mother has taken to social media to warn parents everywhere. “Other parents saw my pictures and messaged me to say they had similar problems,” she said. “I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Next has since addressed the issue.
“We are terribly sorry for the distress caused and we are taking this matter very seriously,” they said. “We’ve asked for this pair of shoes to be returned so we can carry out a detailed inspection of this shoe, since this is the first complaint of this nature that we’ve received.”
