Six months after giving birth, British mum of four Amber Hughes has spoken about her unbelievable and rather harrowing birth experience.
When doctors opened her up for an emergency c-section, Amber’s son had already been born naturally, according to reports.
Amber’s story
Amber had gone into labour in July 2015 when she was just 30 weeks pregnant.
After 36 hours of labour, she was still only 3 centimetres dilated, so she was rushed into the operating theatre for an emergency c-section because doctors were worried that she would get an infection.
But after cutting her open, the doctors were shocked to find no baby in Amber’s uterus. This is because at the exact moment they cut her open, she had reportedly delivered her baby vaginally.
Her newborn boy, named Olly, was only discovered by doctors between his mum’s legs after he started crying.
“It was horrific,”said Amber, recounting the birth. “I was expecting my bundle of joy to be passed to me, but instead I watched panic spread over doctors’ faces.
“For two whole minutes they were truly baffled until they heard little cries coming from my lap and pulled up the sheet to find Olly lying in between my legs.
“I wondered if it was the drugs I was on and I was imagining it, not only was I cut open unnecessarily, but my poor baby was under a sheet alone.”
According to reports, the doctor had explained to Amber that the baby had already begun his descent in the birth canal when they cut her open, and it was an odd situation. She said, “I now have a visible scar that wasn’t needed, and I’m still recovering from my C-section.”

How can this happen?
Isabel Blumberg, an obstetrician at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City reportedly says she has never heard of such a situation before.
However, she recalls one occasion where she had requested for a patient to have a c-section, and then found out she didn’t have an operating room. While waiting for one, Dr Blumberg examined her patient to discover she was fully dilated.
“That happens,” she said. “Sometimes we call C-sections prematurely.”
Dr. Blumberg also says, “This was her fourth baby, he was small and, instinctively, the body will push it out.
“Her uterus contracted it out as they opened her up, and she didn’t even feel it with the level of anesthesia required for a C-section.
“Between when the need for surgery was declared and the first cut was made, she transitioned in a very short period of time.”
Until the little one cried, doctors also would have had no reason but to check anywhere else but inside the mum’s abdomen.
“They’re just looking at the abdomen. You don’t see the vagina during a C-section,” said Dr. Blumberg.
While Amber is upset over the turn of events, in the end, doctor have pointed out that what matters is that she and the baby are both well. Amber meanwhile, has asked that the hospital she gave birth at, issue an apology for what happened.
