Most dangerous game ever?

In this technologically savvy and connected world, internet trends and their subsequent copycats and parodies come and go in a matter of months. First it was the ‘Gangnam Style‘, then we had the ‘Harlem Shake’ and now, what could be a potentially hazardous and dangerous new trend — ‘The Knife song and game.’

Catchy and dangerous
So this isn’t something really new as we’ve all probably come across the knife game on TV or movies where tough guys or drunk couples dare each other to stab a knife in between their fingers in a circular motion at increasing speeds.

But what’s new is the song and the videos that have sparked this dangerous trend. The videos feature exciting, heart-stopping action that you just can’t look away from as you wait for that one slip that could mean a severed finger and lots of blood.

Gone viral
This ‘knife game’ and its accompanying song has since gone viral when a Norwegian teen, Hanna Fylling Ellingseter uploaded a video of her rendition of the game with sharp knife and speedy lyrics. The video had gotten over 500,000 views in a matter of 72 hours but has since been taken down due to copyright infringement.

The title of the video was “Most dangerous song ever” and we couldn’t agree more. A knife in the wrong hands is a recipe for disaster and when the video has sprouted tons of parodies, we are just waiting for just one wrong move that could lead to a trip to the emergency room.

Dealing with dangerous material
What you can do as parents is to talk to your child about the dangers of such videos;

• Communicate to them the dangers of how actually emulating the actions and stunts shown could have dire consequences.
• Place safety controls on your computer.
• Have your computer in a common area such as the living room.
• Check that your child has no access to sharp objects such as knives.
• The most important thing you can do is to just be vigilant.
