Another case of a girl molested on MRT in Singapore has cropped up.

In latest reports, a 26-year-old man was arrested on Dec 5 for allegedly molesting a 11-year-old. The incident happened on an MRT train between Clementi and Redhill stations, at around 12:20 pm.

The case is disturbing because the victim is just a child.

If found guilty, the culprit can be punished with a jail term of up to to 2 years, or with a fine, or with caning, or any combination of such punishments.

Shame, embarrassment and sometimes, confusion over what really happened, may be some reasons why victims choose to stay silent, and not report cases of molestation.

But the best way to deter such perverts is to let them know that they are not going to get away with it. Name them. Shame them. Report them.

This is what you should do when you are molested in public:

  • If you are uncertain or confused whether someone beside you is sexually harassing you, but may seem like he is attempting at it, gesture towards whatever he is doing that makes you feel uncomfortable, and tell him firmly, “Excuse me!”
  • If he continues, stand up for yourself and say, “No!”
  • Scream or tell someone, “This man is trying to touch me!”
  • Get these people to help call police and prevent him from getting away.
  • If you are alone and some suspicious creep approaches you, stay as far away from this person as possible. Make a run for it if you have to, and call the police (999).
