What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?

The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the end of autumn harvest. At the same time, it is also when the moon shines its brightest. During this time, there are lots of Mid-Autumn Festival decorations like lanterns on display, as well as eating mooncakes.

This celebration comes with many legends around it, the most famous of which involves Chang-E. She is the wife of archer Hou Yi, who shot down nine of the 10 suns to save the people on Earth.

Hou Yi received a bottle of elixir which could make him immortal. But he wanted to stay with Chang-E, so he asked her to safekeep it.

However, one of Hou Yi’s students wanted to steal it, so Chang-E drank the elixir instead. She rose higher and higher until she reached the moon and stayed there forever.

So during the festival, people eat mooncakes in her honour just like how Hou Yi offered mooncakes in the hope of seeing her.

Things to do during Mid-Autumn Festival 2022

Because the Mid-Autumn Festival revolves around appreciating the moon, the celebrations naturally happen after the sun sets.

A lot of people set up moon-viewing parties with Mid-Autumn Festival decorations all around them. They flock to gardens and sit in awe of the moon, paper lanterns in hand, nibbling on mooncakes.

Lanterns for adults and kids

Children adore this festival, so it’s great that there are Mid-Autumn Festival decorations for them. Traditional lanterns are made of paper with wax candles, but these days there are a lot of battery-operated ones too.

The kids get a kick out of choosing from different designs like cartoon characters, cars, and animals.

You can marvel at large magnificent lanterns if you attend celebrations all around the island, including Chinatown.

The Chinatown streets will light up until September 25. Witness the artists’ creativity and craftsmanship in person with your family and friends.

There will also be a trade fair, a food fair, and free weekend trade shows. Don’t miss the Lantern Painting Competition!

You can also check out Gardens By The Bay, which will be a perfect venue to check out the moon. Who knows, you might catch an outdoor live performance while you’re there!

There is also a lantern installation called Celestial Bodies at the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall until September 25.

Mooncakes all around

And what is the Mid-Autumn Festival without mooncakes? Another legend has it that these pastries helped in freeing Yuan China from the rule of Mongols. This is because the rebels hid their messages inside the mooncakes and enabled an uprising.

Today, you can take your pick from a variety of mooncake flavours. There are the traditional ones with lotus seed and egg yolk.

Meanwhile, you can also try the snowskin versions. They come with decadent fillings like champagne truffle and chocolate.

Whichever flavour you choose, pair them up with a strong cup of Chinese tea to cleanse your palate. Then marvel at the Mid-Autumn Festival decorations all around you!
