We’re halfway through the school holidays and all our little ones have been doing is complain about the rainy weather and spend most of their time with their eyes glued to the TV screen or their tablet.

Mums, don’t you think it’s time to get them out of the house for an activity that is both fun and educational? We’re starting to worry that if our little ones don’t use their brains soon, they won’t be able to turn them back on when school starts in the new year.

From 1 Dec 2017 to 1 Jan 2018, the S.E.A. Aquarium will become a Christmas-themed festive arena for its annual Merry Fishmas celebrations with tons of exciting activities for everyone!

7 reasons yule be at S.E.A. Aquarium on this Christmas!

1. Learn how to protect the environment with the 3Rs

Mums, did you know that the per capita household water consumption in Singapore was 148 litres per day last year? Although this is better than 2003 at 165 litres per day, it’s still a far cry from the Singapore government’s goal 140 litres per day by 2030!

It’s important for Singaporeans young and old to learn about how we can protect our environment and the oceans by following the 3Rs—reduce, reuse and recycle.

With that in mind, a group of young environmentalists collected enough plastic bottles to build a towering 3.2-metre tall Christmas tree! That’s a lot of recycled plastic, isn’t it?

Now that you know why you need to reduce, reuse and recycle, it’s time to start doing it yourself!

Visit Scrooge at the Recycling Workshop and learn how to get creative with recycled materials! He will be teaching us how to upcycle everyday household items into awesome Christmas decorations and gifts for your friends and family.

2. Become a protector of  marine animals great and small as a Guardian of the S.E.A.A

In 2010 alone, 215 million metric tons of plastic found its way into the sea. Did you know that it takes an aluminium can 200 years to degrade in water? For a plastic bottle, it’s closer to 400 years!

All this plastic floating around in the oceans is rapidly killing off marine life and having other negative effects on our oceans.

At the conservation booths in the S.E.A. Aquarium, your little ones will learn how practising the 3Rs can help protect marine life and what happens to marine habitats when they are polluted.

Encourage them to join the Guardians of the S.E.A.A and get involved with helping to protect Singapore’s marine life through coastal cleanups as well as learning more from inspirational and fun events held at the aquarium.

3.  Find 5 new marine friends!

The most iconic amongst the newest resident is the Ornate Eagle Ray. The S.E.A. Aquarium is very proud to feature this species and has plans to start the world’s first Ornate Eagle Ray breeding programme next year.

The Ornate Eagle Ray can grow up to a length of 5 metres! Shy by nature, these creatures are on the endangered list due to accidental capture by fishermen in the Southeast Asian region combined with a low reproduction rate.

The other new additions to the S.E.A. Aquarium are the Mauritius Triggerfish, Argentine Humphead, Honeycomb Blowfish and Bat Ray.

Your little superhero fans will love the Bat Ray, another giant ray that can grow to a wingspan of six feet and 200 pounds! Try to catch a feeding with these majestic creatures when you’ll see them slap their fins against the sand to expose buried clams.

4. Watch Scuba Santa and his Cheeky Elves play with their marine animal friends

Make sure you’re at the Open Ocean Habitat daily at 3:30 pm (there’s an extra show at 1:45 pm on 2nd / 3rd Dec / 9th / 10th Dec, 16th to 1st Jan ) to see the adventures of Scuba Santa and his Cheeky Elves!

Scuba Santa proves that you don’t need snow to have a very merry Christmas as he and his elves dive deep to bring special treats to their marine friends.

Keep a watchful eye on Scuba Santa’s elves during the performance as they’re sure to get up to some silly mischief and then Scuba Santa will need your help to check up on them!

5. Get ready to meet your favourite characters!

After you watch Scuba Santa and his elves dive with all their marine friends, you can meet him and tell him what’s on your wish list!

Visit the Ocean Dome at 2.15pm for a picture and hug with S.E.A. Aquarium’s original mascot, Mai the manta ray . Next, head to the Ocean Gallery at 3.45pm to meet the S.E.A. Aquarium’s new mascot, Sam the hammerhead shark. Don’t worry, he doesn’t bite!

While you’re at the Ocean Gallery, try a Christmas cupcake or other festive treats from Mrs Claus special bakery at a special price!

6. Spend a magical night under the sea

Mums, can you imagine your little one’s joy at the thought of spending a night sleeping at the S.E.A. Aquarium?

On 22-23 December, they’ll be hosting Santa’s Ocean Dreams, a one-night sleepaway camp where little ocean explorers and their parents can enjoy a giant sleepover at the aquarium!

In the evening, the kids will be entertained by Santa, Elf and Scrooge before they visit three conservation booths. They will learn about how they can reduce, reuse and recycle, as well as why protecting the environment is important. Afterwards, they’ll participate in a recycling workshop to make Christmas cards with Santa, Elf and Scrooge.

On the second day, you can look forward to adorable photo ops with the diver elves and a delicious Christmas breakfast at the Bay Restaurant. All the kids will be given a reusable goodie bag with colouring sheets, craft materials and a collectible hammerhead shark keychain.
