When teenager Rachel Gelmis took a voluntary drug test offered at her school, she was absolutely sure that her results would be clean.

However, they came back positive—and not for the one prescribed drug she was actually taking. She tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, benzodiazepine, and barbiturates.

Gelmis told her mum Karen that the results were wrong, but her mum didn’t believe her. Thankfully, the school found out that they had misread the test and called back to set things straight, but by that time, the damage had been done.

How did her mum make up for it? With this cake:

“Sorry we thought you did meth… & coke & pot & heroin :(“

“I got called to the office and basically cornered by four members of the administration,” Gelmis told The Huffington Post. “I was completely terrified because I had no idea what was going on. They told [Mum] before I could talk to her. She was really freaked out, and she cried when she took me home.”

Gelmis told her grief-stricken parents that the test results were inaccurate, but by that time, her mum was already considering checking her daughter into rehab.

Fortunately for the teen, her school detected their error—she was clean, after all—and called up her parents to let them know before the situation could escalate.

“A few hours later, the school called my mum and told her they misread the test,” Gelmis told Select All. “They said lines were supposed to show up a certain way to indicate which drugs are in your system and they just read it the wrong way.”

“I thought it would be something silly that would make us both feel better,” Gelmis told The Huffington Post. “I don’t remember what flavour the cake was but I do remember the frosting was caramel apple.”

“She was just worried about me”

This all happened back in 2012, but has only recently gone viral recently after the now-20-year-old Gelmis reposted it on her social media accounts. She didn’t expect it to get as much attention as it has, and even shared a screen cap of her breaking the news of their new viral status to her mom.

Gelmis has no hard feelings towards her mum from the incident. “She was just worried about me,” she explained to Select All. But what can we learn from this? As Gelmis told The Huffington Post, “Listen to your kid, try to be understanding, remember that mistakes happen!”
