Following its debut in 2020 as LEGO’s first-ever theme rooted in Chinese culture, LEGO Monkie Kid returns this March to continue its adventure, inspired by the 500-year-old legend of the Monkey King. Featuring seven exciting new sets and a continuation of the Monkie Kid animated series, the theme empowers children to create their own hero legend, while inspiring them with the values of bravery, resilience, and optimism.
The Monkie Kid tale began last year when an ordinary boy finds Monkey King’s legendary staff and becomes the chosen one. Along the way, he meets brave and loyal friends, who aid him in his quest to protect the city from the Demon Bull King and his army of Bull Clones. This year, the exciting journey continues with new challenges from the Demon Bull King, Princess Iron Fan and Redson, while facing new adversaries such as The Spider Queen and The Bone Demon.
“With the extension of the LEGO Monkie Kid theme, we continue to pay tribute to the beloved classic, while re-imaging it to provide a refreshing common ground for children, parents and grandparents to build and play together. The Lego System in Play celebrates creative expression and problem-solving. In this vein, LEGO Monkie Kid enables children to engage in great building experiences while learning important Chinese culture and values through play,” says Rohan Mathur, Marketing Director Southeast Asia at the LEGO Group.
For the very first time, 80024 The Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain is brought to life in LEGO brick form with a different story featured in every section of the playset, from his birth to becoming king of the monkeys. It also includes features such as an opening rock to reveal the Monkey King and a buildable waterfall that opens to allow entry to the hidden mountain cave. Consisting of 1,949 pieces, the set includes 8 minifigures, including 4 different versions of Monkey King to play out specific legendary tales.
Children can also look forward to six additional action-packed sets with exciting new characters and impressive product innovation to inspire endless hours of fun, imaginative play.
For example, they can gather additional friends for Monkie Kid such as the 80021 LEGO Monkie Kid Lion Guardian with a full posable Lion Guardian mech toy, two hidden spring-loaded shooters, the Spider Queen’s battle rig with movable legs as well as a posable robotic spider. What’s interesting with the set is also the inclusion of a buildable arcade with a toy-grabbing claw game that dispenses toy elements, as well as 5 minifigures with cool weapons for role-play battles. The Monkie Kid and the Lion Guardian can then battle with the 80022 Spider Queen’s Arachnoid Base that features lever-operated attack pincers, which opens to reveal a minifigure prison and the Spider Queen’s lab for building robotic spiders.
To elevate the roleplaying scenarios, children can also choose for themselves a battle transport of their choice. For example, the 80018 Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike features transforming wheels for flight mode, two hidden disc shooters, Spindrax’s bike with two stud shooters, a posable robotic spider toy, 3 minifigures with weapons including The Golden Staff for the heroic Monkie Kid to save a civilian from the character Spindrawx. Alternatively, they can choose a jet aircraft such as the 80019 Red Son’s Inferno Jet alongside additional minifigures and accessory elements such as the Red Son’s Power Glove and a Flower Fruit Mountain mini build. There is also the 80020 White Dragon’s Horse Jet where they can role-play as characters Mei and Mo the cat that are battling to save a civilian from the Spider Queen’s Huntsman.
That’s not all. They can even choose a helicopter battle with 80023 Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter that features 2 spring-loaded shooters and 2 detachable ‘cargo containers’ with lots of homely features within, such as bunk beds and a buildable arcade machine. This playset also includes 8 minifigures including Monkie Kid, Mei, Sandy, Mo the cat, Spider Queen, Mr Tand with a journey to the West book element, and Red Son with a flyer for some battle action.
Season 2 of LEGO Monkie Kid Mini Movie Debuts on MediaCorp on 2 April 2021
In addition to the new LEGO sets, there will be a Season 2 to the animated series, comprising a mini-movie and 10 episodes. In season 1, we saw a young boy named ‘MK’ who discovered Monkey King’s magical staff, which was left on top of a mountain to imprison the evil Demon Bull King. Through trial and tribulation alongside his friends, he went on a journey of self-discovery to become the hero this generation needs to bring peace upon the city.
In Season 2, Spider Queen vows revenge after her defeat by MK and his team. Using her technological knowhow combined with the magic of a mysterious benefactor, she emerges from her lair supercharged to take over the city. She uses her newfound power to capture Monkey King and Demon Bull King; and uses a magical venom to transform ordinary citizens into Spider Zombies to do her bidding. Our heroes, led by MK, must travel to the legendary Cloud City and track down the ingredients to cure the Spider Queen’s venom while using their combined powers to defeat the eight-legged monstrosity.
The mini movie will debut on local broadcasting station MediaCorp on 2 April, 11am to 12pm. This is followed by a dedicated one-hour slot for a re-run of last year’s 10-episode series every Friday from 9 April to 7 May, between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
