As the host of the 28th SEA Games, Singapore is in the grip of a sporting fever. Here is another way to get into the sporting spirit – head on down to the Singapore Sports Hub for the SEA Games Carnival from 31 May to 16 June.
Expect a whole lot of adventure and fun with a chance to box with mega boxing gloves, play golf with a hockey stick, pool with footballs, jump on inflatables, listen to live music and watch men on stilts. Hey, the kids even get a chance to defy rules of nature by trying out the ‘Walk-on-Water’ activity. And the best thing, the activities are all free!
Here are our top picks of what to do at the SEA Games Carnival:
Let the tots loose in the Junior Zone
In the Junior Zone, kids can have endless fun going up and down the giant slide (it is 10 metres high, and you can accompany your child!) or running through the obstacles in the Nila Castle inflatable, or spend time finding the winning balls in the ball pool. Some of the older kids may want to try to make their way up the Rocky Mountain – a giant inflatable rock climbing structure. And when they have sweated it out, let the kids have some down time with a chance to paint a SEA Games tote bag or torch.
There is so much more to do at the Carnival, read on to find out…
Defy science at the ‘Walk-on-Water’ challenge
Kids aged 5 and over can try and have their own miraculous moment by walking across a cornstarch-filled pool – they would literally be walking on water, even though it might be momentary. Remind them to keep moving around to prevent sinking in! There might be a queue though as only five participants are allowed at a time.
Get whacky with creative sports tryouts
Try out some really fun and variations of some of the SEA Games sporting events. Get the kids to try their skill at pool soccer, where they would stand inside an upsized pool table and kick the balls, instead of using pool cues. Or you can get into the inflatable boxing ring, don a set of mega inflatable boxing gloves and beat your opponent in a round of Mega Boxing (Mega fun we say!). There is also the hybrid Hockey Golf where you have to strike a putt using a hockey stick. But if you are truly adventurous, don’t miss Zorb Bowling, where you become a human bowling ball in an attempt to strike down the pins.
Those looking to try a more traditional sport can try their hands at the 300 ̊ table tennis where up to eight players can play at the same time.
Bring out the competitive streak with laser tag
Adrenaline junkies get your ragtag team together and aim for your opponents! Each team has unlimited lives; in case you get ‘killed’ rush back to base to revive yourself.
Soak in the atmosphere with the Roving Acts
The vibe at the Carnival is fun, laid back and easy going. You’ll also get to redeem an exclusive carnival memento by completing any 5 activities. After the kids have earned their sporting stripes, let them sit back and enjoy watching the numerous roving acts, which include stiltwalkers, jugglers, magicians, unicyclists, balloon scultptors. And that’s not enough folks, there are also daily light shows and special artistes performances on weekends that will have you tapping your toes and being glad that you stayed on.
