It’s okay not to look perfect after pregnancy, says Haylie Duff

"As I got older and I cared more about other things that tended to be a bit more important than that—things that weren’t so surface level it just tended to not be as important to me.”

Women have a lot expected of them. Mothers especially. They are expected to run the household, they are expected look after the kids, attend to their husbands, and balance their careers. Unfortunately, our society also dictates that we should expect mothers to look their best. (How many times have you judged a mother for failing to look as she had pre-pregnancy?) It is okay not to look perfect after pregnancy?

Actor Haylie Duff begs to differ. After giving birth to her child, she hasn’t gone on juice cleanses or occupied her time working out at the gym or experimented on weird diets.

She thinks she fine just as she is. She has managed to maintain a healthy relationship with food, despite Hollywood’s obsession with skinny culture.

“I think when I was younger I had so much more focus on that,” she said. “As I got older and I cared more about other things that tended to be a bit more important than that—things that weren’t so surface level it just tended to not be as important to me.”

Haylie believes that most women don’t look perfect after having a baby, and that’s okay.

“There’s this very intense pressure to look like you didn’t have a baby two days after you had a baby,” she said. “First of all, I didn’t get offered that deal with the devil. I didn’t get to look like I didn’t have a baby two days later so that just wasn’t an option for me. It’s great for people who can look like that, but it’s so unrealistic for the majority of women in this country, and it also has the tendency to make you feel bad about yourself.”

The most important part about being a woman is being confident about who you are and how you look. While there is nothing wrong with trying to get back to your pre-pregnancy figure, no one should be judged for having gained a few pounds during pregnancy.
