This is a story that would bring a smile on your face almost instantly. India’s first test-tube baby Harsha Chawda has delivered a healthy baby boy.
Born on Monday, at 10:36 am at Jaslok Hospital, the baby was also delivered by Dr Indira Hinduja. Dr Indira Hinduja was the one that carried out the IVF procedure, which led to the birth of Harsha.
“I had kept in touch with her all these years. She is my second mother,” Harsha told a leading daily on Monday evening. Harsha was blessed with the baby boy thirty years after her birth at Mumbai’s KEM hospital.
Dr Hinduja was assisted by Dr Kusum Zaveri during the delivery, which happened via C-section. Coincidentally, the same team had delivered Harsha as well. “We had to do a caesarean as the baby was presenting a breech (the head was up and the legs were down). He is a healthy and chubby baby and weighed 3.18 kg at birth,” Dr Hinduja told the daily.
Factors behind IVF success rates
While Harsha's success story is one that would give hope to many women, there are many factors that determine the success rate of an IVF procedure. Here are a few things that you should keep in mind before going for one:
- Age: The age of the biological parents has the biggest role in the success of an IVF cycle. For men too, age matters as it affects the sperm’s DNA integrity, but to a lesser extent.
- The protocols: IVF protocols and monitoring during the IVF cycle also contribute greatly to its success. Monitoring is very necessary to make mid-course adjustments to the treatment protocol and avoid potential complications.
- Previous pregnancy: If you have had one or more previous successful pregnancies with the same partner, then your current IVF process is better poised to yield the right results. Recurrent miscarriages lower your chances.
- Egg quality and age of donor: Factors such as egg quality and age of donor are important. Using donor eggs from younger women may increase the chances of pregnancy for women over 40.
