A man in Singapore has been sentenced to four years and six months' jail for having sex with his own daughter. The 56-year-old man received his sentence on Monday (21 June).
The court heard that the man had sex with his now 32-year-old daughter at her home back on 17 May 2019. Both father and daughter cannot be named due to a gag order issued by the court.
Incest Court Cases: Man Has Sex With His Daughter
The man –who was previously jailed for five years for drug offences – stayed over at his daughter's home after he was released from prison on a remission order. This means he was released earlier than his scheduled release date. The order required him not to commit any offences between 14 May 2019 and 11 January 2021.
While at his daughter's home, he stayed in the living room of the flat and his daughter occupied a room. Three days later, the man and his daughter had sex in her room. Then on 20 October 2019, the man attempted to have sex with her again but they ended up not doing anything.
The incident came to light in November 2019 when the daughter was admitted to a hospital and confided in a medical social worker about being afraid of staying at home with her father.
She also revealed that they had sex and the incident was reported to the police.
Man Pleads Guilty, Gets Sentenced To Jail For 4 Years And 6 Months
The man has pleaded guilty to one count of incest as well as another count of attempted incest. He has also been sentenced to an additional 592 days' imprisonment for breaching the remission order.
According to CNA, the court recently heard on Monday (21 June) that the man was initially charged with rape more than a year ago. Although, no further details have been provided so the charges were amended.
District Judge Janet Wang said that the relationship between father and daughter was not a factor. In sentencing, she says, "What is relevant is that both offences were committed within the home, which is meant to be a sanctuary for families."
It was also noted that the age gap between the man and his daughter was more than 20 years. He also reoffended three days after being released from prison.
Anyone convicted in incest cases can be jailed for up to five years.
