Good news! Singapore students who took the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma exams in 2020 have smashed it out of the park. According to the Switzerland-based IB Organisation, Singapore managed to produce 55 of the 99 perfect scorers in 2020 exams, results for which were released on 4 January.
In fact, students from Anglo Chinese School topped the ranking for the 2020 results of Global Top IB Schools, bringing Singapore to the top of the list.
Top IB Schools Results: More Than Half Of The Perfect Scorers This Year Are From Singapore

As you know, the IB Diploma Programme is a two-year programme that is conducted at 27 institutions in Singapore and IB qualifications are recognised by universities worldwide.
Last year, 2,228 students in total took the IB exams in Singapore and their pass percentage is outstanding.
- 97.73% of them passed the exams. During this time, the global pass rate was 76.68% and 91.83% for those in the Asia-Pacific region.
- 50.65% of Singapore students also scored 40 points and above out of 45 in the exam. About 11.63% of global students and 27.66% of Asia-Pacific students got the same result.
The Singaporean students who sat the IB diploma exams are from eight different Singapore schools. These include:
1. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)

All 443 students in this school passed the IB exam. Their average score was 41.8 points with 363 of them achieving 40 points and above. Although, they did not release the number of their students who got the perfect score of 45 points.
ACS(I) is the first Singapore school to offer the IB diploma since it was accredited in 2005.
2. Hwa Chong International School
All of 99.3% of Hwa Chong International School’s 144-strong cohort passed the exam. Their average score was 37 and six of their students obtained 44 points.
3. St Joseph’s Institution
At SJI, 99.3% of its 272 students in the diploma programme passed with an average score of 40.3. They also have 184 students who obtained at least 40 points.
4. St Joseph’s Institution International
SJI International also saw all their 183 graduates in the cohort pass. They had an average score of 37.7 points.
5. Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah
The first batch of 25 students from Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah in the diploma programme passed the exams.
The highest score achieved by the religious school was 42 points. Meanwhile, the average score obtained by the school was 34.8 points.
6. School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA)
All 157 students at Sota in the cohort passed as well. The students in the diploma programme gained an average score of 38.7 points. More than half of them even scored 39 points and above.

Covid-19 Brought Upon Changes To The IB Diploma Exams: What To Expect

Due to prolonged Covid-19 uncertainties, the IB Organisation says schools were provided with a range of options for their students. This included awarding grades using written examinations if they could be sat safely. They also included an alternative route using coursework and predicted grades.
Schools could also consider deferring to the May 2021 session without any additional cost or withdrawing from the IB November session with a full refund.
The organisation also noted that 74% of the IB world schools managed to administer the exams with local guidelines for safe exam administration in place. Although, 27% of them were not able to administer the exams due to governmental mandate or local conditions.
But even with the global disruptions in learning and teaching as well as other circumstances that may have affected the student’s performance, the IB organisation ensured that their grades were “fair, valid and comparable irrespective of whether their school was able to run examinations or not.”
Those who did face adverse circumstances over and above the pandemic were supported on a case-by-case basis.
