Hyperpigmentation: Why is it happening to me?

Hyperpigmentation: Why is it happening to me?

The birth of your lovely baby is a blessing but you can’t say the same for the dark patches or spots that appear during/after pregnancy. Read on to find out how you can combat pigmentation problems without the use of any lasers or light machines.

Post-pregnancy hormones and other factors may cause skin pigmentation problems.

The beauty of motherhood almost always comes with a few unexpected changes to your body.

One of them is the impact that post-pregnancy hormones can have on your skin. After childbirth, your skin can begin to look dull with uneven patches and even unsightly acne.

Coupled with all those sleepless nights, stress of parenthood, running around after your little one and just sheer lack of time (and energy!) for a daily skincare regime, your face may begin showing tell-tale signs of some much-needed pampering.

Asian skin and hyperpigmentation problems

Asian skin is particularly prone to hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is usually due to an increase in melanin – a natural substance found in your body that determines the colour of your skin. Pregnancy, amongst other factors such as stress, aging, lack of sleep and exposure to sunlight may cause a higher production of melanin, leading to pigmentation problems.

While it is commonly known that pigmentation comes with age, there are other factors such as hectic schedules, constant stress and bad sleeping habits that may lead to pigmentation. These factors can also cause frequent breakouts on certain parts of your face, which are followed by the surfacing of post-acne pigmentation, something that is way harder to remove than pimples.

Pigmentation problems, when not properly cared for, may become darker or bigger in size. In fact, you may end up facing more than one type of pigmentation problem at a time.

On top of these, Singapore’s tropical climate means that our pigmentation problems are likely to be further aggravated by the constant sun exposure.

So how can you deal with the problem of hyper pigmentation? Read on to find out.
