If you’re a mother who is not so tech-savvy but have an inclination towards entrepreneurship, these business ideas for stay-at-home moms might interest you. If you have the skills and abilities with which to start a business, then a home-based business would be ideal.

One of the things to consider when starting a home-based business in Singapore is your interest or skill.

Ask yourself these questions: What activity do I like to do or am trained to do? Would I enjoy doing it everyday as a business?

There are so many home-based business that you can do in Singapore but I am only going to explore eight home-based business ideas for stay-at-home moms you can start with as a hobby or a past-time.

Business ideas for stay-at-home moms:

1. Baking cakes or pastries

If you are good at baking, you can give out samples as gifts to friends and neighbors. And when they like your cakes or pastries, they would share and recommend to their family, friends and neighbors to buy from you – which will lead to the start of your business. You should also set up a blog or Facebook page to showcase your various baking skills.

2. Catering

If you can cook well, then the catering business could be profitable for you. Give out leaflets to your neighbors telling them that you can cook dishes. I knew of this business when I came to my friend’s house. There was no food so she just dialed the number of a neighbor who delivered the food right to their doorstep for an extra charge. There are also special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, baptismal, parties, company seminars and many more which inviduals and companies hold and they need someone to cater for them. This is an evergreen type of business regardless of the economy as people will always spend on food.

3. Events planning

Are you good at planning and organizing events? Do you have what it takes to come up with successful events such as birthdays, parties, social events, weddings, anniversaries and more? Then, you can most probably be successful in establishing an Events Organizing Company right at your own home. You can make use of the phone and the internet to get things done without having to leave your children or your home. You may only have to go out once-in-a while with clients but this requires less leg work and more of coordinating with people who are involved.

4. Day care or tutorial

Many working mothers are looking for someone to look after or take care of their children during the time they are out for work. With this growing trend, you can open your home to taking care of the children of friends or neighbours for a fee while you are taking care of your own. You can even set up a tutorial business if you have been trained to teach.  You can start with a few kids for a few hours everyday and that would already give you a reasonable income. Payments can be arranged on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. But don’t just think of a temporary business but work it out to become permanent.

5. Crafts making

I read once about a mother who earned good income from making scrapbooks and other crafts which she promoted through an online site. She started it as a hobby and grew it into a profitable home-based business. Crafts include beading, jewelry making, embroidery, crocheting, cross stitching, knitting, candle making, basket weaving, painting, etc. If you’re someone who is very creative, then you could very well start your dream business.

7. Direct selling

If you have an inclination towards sales and marketing, then you can join a reputable direct selling company which manufactures health supplements, cosmetics, fragrances and other products you can sell to your neighbors and friends. With this, you don’t need a bigger capital. All you need is to pay the membership fee and the products you will sell.  Direct selling companies you can join are Amway, Herbalife, Forever Living, Nu Skin, Tupperware and many others listed in https://www.dsas.org.sg.

8. Photography

Do you have the passion for taking great pictures? If you do, then you can probably put up your home studio and offer photography services to people around you and even those from afar. If you could offer the most affordable and better pictures than those commercialized photo studios, people will come to you whether you are just a stay-at-home.

In choosing from these business ideas, it is important to consider time with your family especially if you still have small children. You need to ask yourself whether you can commit a definite number of hours everyday for your business. You need to create a work schedule so that none of your responsibilities as a mother, wife and business woman will be jeopardized.  Aside from this, you need to look at the feasibility and profitability of the business venture you plan to put up.

Once you have started, start small. Purchase only needed materials and equipment. Set up a work system which includes your work schedule and how you should operate your business. Though, it might just be a very small business from the start but it is most likely to grow and expand when you have a good system in place.

This, of course entails detailed planning in the form of a business plan. This is why a business venture can be more demanding than an online employment. Market your products or services. Hand out business cards and flyers. Do anything and everything possible to make people know that you are in business. Make use of online websites.  A listing of other small businesses in https://www.sgsmallbiz.com/ will give ideas on other businesses you can take.

Now that you know of these business ideas for stay-at-home moms, think well and plan ahead. If you want to earn income even when you’re just staying at home, then act now.
