Sometimes planning a local outing with the entire family can be a challenge. Everyone wants to visit different places and keeping up with everyone’s tastes can become difficult. But one of the few places that offers something to everyone is Singapore’s Holland Village.
It’s a haven for the locals and tourists alike with plenty of eateries, sightseeing options and local parks.
First established by the Dutch community in the early 1900s, Holland Village first housed British Army personnel and their families. The effects of which can still be seen in the architecture of the buildings there.
No wonder, the neighbourhood is one of the more popular ones in Singapore and quite conveniently located. It’s also the perfect spot to catch local artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Many of the original trade shops have transformed into cafes and restaurants, which makes it great for a night of dining.

1. The Food Joints
There are quite a few and at every budget in Holland Village. For those looking at something Italian, do try La Nonna or visit Bar Bar Black Sheep for a drink with your buddies.
For those looking at satiating late-night hunger pangs, the 2 am Dessert Bar by Janice Wong needs to be on your speed dial. You can also try out Awfully Chocolate for some more dessert options and also a more European style of options.
You should also plan a trip to the D’Good Cafe for some award-winning coffee and a sumptuous breakfast. And if you are on a cheat day, try out FatBoy’s The Burger Bar in Holland Village.
2. The Trade Shops
For those looking to find a piece of history in the neighbourhood, you must visit its trade shops that are being run by the same families for generations. Get some insight into the Singaporean way of business at the Thambi Magazine store.
The place is run by Sam Thambi, the third-generation owner of the establishment that dates back to the 1940s. The first-generation owner, Sam’s grandfather sold newspapers and magazines to the British soldiers living in the vicinity.
Holland Village’s main stretch is also a great place to check out all the bustling activity that takes place in the neighbourhood.

3. The Art Galleries
Artists have found a home in Holland Village and you will find many of them setting up shop with small art galleries.
Do check out TAKSU, a Southeast Asian-themed art gallery, which offers a collection of contemporary paintings from some of the region’s many fine painters.
You will also find small street artists selling everything from customised notebooks to statement pieces for your wardrobe.

4. The Shopping Scene
Not the same as it was a few decades ago, you will still find a number of places to shop in the neighbourhood, most notably the Holland Village Shopping Center.
More than what they sell, you must visit to check out what the neighbourhood was like a few decades ago.
It’s also a great place to find seasonal produce from France, Japan, Thailand, and the US. For tourists, it’s a great place to get souvenirs that will be way cheaper than getting them at the airport!
You should also visit Bynd Artisan, a family-run company that specialises in making leather goods and stationery since the 1940s. The place is known for its elegant artistry, so maybe get something from here instead of the usual fridge magnet.
5. The Outdoors
Holland Village is also home to several local playgrounds while the iconic Singapore Botanic Gardens are in close proximity, just a few stops on the bus or Rail Corridor.
If you are feeling the urge to explore or step out in the sun, trying the many green spaces in and around the neighbourhood.
Head to Watten Estate for its plenty of play areas, scooter paths and lots of trees that provide the place cool even on a warm summer day. You can also head to the Greenwood strip of restaurants once you’re done.
Want to sweat it out a little? Head to the Sunset Way Playground that offers lots of green pastures, play equipment and even a fitness station.
