As parents, we are always looking for opportunities to inject some learning into fun and games. And why not? It makes great sense. Learning coupled with fun goes deep into the minds and memories of children.

This Halloween, there’s a perfect place where spooky fun and learning is being brought together for this very reason:  Spooky Seas!

Have you heard of it? Spooky Seas is S.E.A. Aquarium’s annual event celebrating Halloween at Resorts World Sentosa. And this year’s theme is “Meet the Quirky.”

Kids just love weird creatures, don’t they? They are fascinated by all kinds of bizarre things. Keeping this in mind, this festival has brought five strange and peculiar species of sea life to Singapore’s shores. These creatures of the deep are the Bumphead Parrotfish, Elephant Fish, Paddlefish, Tasselled Wobbegong Shark and Vampire Fish.

The names are enough to get your kids really excited (and you, spooked!), aren’t they? Wait until your kids encounter them in real life at the S.E.A Aquarium!

What’s special about these creatures? Prepare for a fright!

So what’s so spooky about these five special creatures? It has to be their appearance, without a doubt.

One of them is a deep sea creature with a trunk-like snout, another is a giant sand-pooping fish with a parrot-like beak, and yet another one is a toothy Amazonian beast which pierces its prey with sharp fangs!

Almost unbelievable, right?

But mums and dads, these eccentric sea creatures are real, and they are waiting for you and your kids to reveal themselves in all their frightful glory.

Here is a brief rundown of the five spookiest creatures you will encounter at the S.E.A. Aquarium:

Bumphead Parrotfish

Oh yes, this fish has got a bump on its head! It is one of the largest reef fishes in the world. The bumphead parrotfish can grow up to 1.3 metres in length and weigh 46 kilogrammes. It can be recognised by its bulbous forehead and powerful beak that allows it to crush corals and to scrape rocks for its main diet—algae—that grows in the crevices.

S.E.A. Aquarium is one of the few institutions worldwide to feature the bumphead parrotfish.

Elephant Fish

The elephant fish looks a bit like an elephant because it has a flexible, trunk-like projection at the tip of the long snout that it uses to probe the sea floor for shellfish, small fishes and invertebrates. It is usually found in the dark depths of the ocean.

Vampire Fish

We kid you not, but this one is really a sea vampire! It is a truly ferocious migratory sportfish. The vampire fish has a body like a salmon, but it’s the jaws that will make yourjaws drop! It has a face full of impressive daggers for teeth—in particular, two huge fangs. These grow from the lower jaws and fit into conical nasal slots in the upper jaws—which is super weird! The vampire fish normally impales its victims with its oversized bottom canine teeth and streak away.

Besides these three spooky creatures, you will also find two more eccentric fishes at the S.E.A. Aquarium: The Paddlefish and the Tasselled Wobbegong Shark.

Why Should You Bring Your Kids to Spooky Seas: Meet the Quirky?

From 1 September to 28 October, your entire family can come up-close with the aquarium’s latest quirky and bizarre animals and learn more about them as part of its annual family-friendly Spooky Seas event.

At the S.E.A. Aquarium, each curious fish has a station dedicated to it, where the entire family can learn some unusual facts about these extraordinary creatures through fun and games.

Kids can also take part in a scavenger hunt to learn about the quirky and bizarre marine species in the aquarium, and even mimic the animals’ unique behaviours at various interactive stations as part of Spooky Seas.
