Life doesn’t deal the same cards to everyone and some have it easier than others. However, those individuals who refuse to bow down to the odds are the true winners in life.
One such individual who wants to defy the odds is Mdm Rumi. The 35-year-old is a mother of two lovely girls, aged six and one.
The single mum though is struggling to manage her living expenses as she is undergoing a divorce. The Singaporean lives in an open market rented flat with her children and her aged mum and is the only breadwinner of the house.
No Support From Former Partner
Her former partner refused to provide regular financial support through maintenance. At the moment, she is receiving social assistance. But that is usually far from enough to have a decent life, especially when you have kids in school.
Given her caregiving responsibilities towards her mum and children, she has so far been unsuccessful at securing employment. And the lack of a job means it is getting difficult every day to get by every day.
Daughter Starts Primary School Next Year
Like every mother out there, Rumi wants the best for her children and the pandemic hasn’t helped her case.
With few full-time jobs in the market, she hasn’t been able to land one yet that meets her needs to get back on her feet. Rumi’s financial struggle also comes at a time when her older daughter is set to begin primary school next year.
At present, the little one is attending full-time private childcare as there is no non-private childcare near their home. Rumi hopes to enrol her younger daughter in the same school, which will help ease her caregiving duties as she can attend to both children at the same time, once she lands a full-time job.
An unsupportive partner has only made Mdm Rumi’s living situation worse, burdening the mum with caring for her daughters all alone, both physically and financially. All this single mum is asking for is a little help to get by till things turn for the better.
And you can do that by contributing to the Ray of Hope campaign that aims to secure the mum and daughters once the children are in school and the Rumi lands a full-time job.
You Can Contribute Towards This Family’s Wellbeing
As part of the campaign, Ray of Hope plans to raise $2,260 to help the Rumi family.
This will include the one-time childcare registration fee of $760 that needs to be paid in September itself for October intake. The campaign wants to raise another $1,500 for groceries expenses for the next three months ($500 x 3 months).
So far, the organisation has raised $1,1510 for Rumi and her children. which is 66 per cent of the campaign goal.
This is not the first time that the Ray of Hope assisted Mdm Rumi. The organisation previously raised $3,500 for the single mum to help with living expenses while was undergoing her divorce.

Like we said, not everyone gets dealt with the same cards in life. But you do get the opportunity to change that sometimes by a stroke of luck and most times by sheer will.
So all the single mums out there putting in their blood and sweat to make the most of the situation, we salute your efforts. We hope and pray that you find your success story.
For those looking to start a new chapter in their lives, here are 5 good careers for single moms that can be considered:
1. Sales
Different roles in sales are fairly common to find, which makes it an easy starting point for single mums looking to begin a new career. You can look for sales jobs that either are full-time gigs with a fixed salary or on a commission basis. The latter is usually the case and promises high rewards for the more sales you make.
2. Freelancer
This is a good enough role for those looking are flexible options as a working professional. Freelancing allows you to dictate the time and money depending on the kind of services you provide.
From writing, graphic designing, to animation and website development, there’s a lot of options for mums to try their hands at. There is also a need for freelance virtual assistants that help professionals organise things remotely.
3. Childcare worker
A top job for several single mums is being a babysitter or a nanny. With hands-on experience of handling your own kids, you can look at taking care of others who are willing to pay you for your services.
You can also reach out to programs for babysitting that will help you land a role at a local daycare.
4. Educator
Another fairly flexible option for single mums, being a full-time classroom teacher or educational professional allows you to work in hours that favour more time for you to pay attention at home.
Moreover, you’re utilising skills that include managing children. Teachers contribute immensely to society as the first responders when it comes to shaping the thoughts and careers of impressionable children.
5. Healthcare professional

Of course, these do need you to complete certain courses for the necessary certification. They also offer alternative schedules depending on your home commitments and are well-paying in most cases.
While these are some of the options that we’ve listed as good careers for single moms, it by no means implies that you have to be limited to these roles.
Women, especially mums, can rule the world and conquer anything they set their heart to.
