Social Media, Cost of Living, Tech and Environmental Concerns are Impacting How Generation Z are Approaching Parenting

“We don't want to do it the way that we were raised. We know that generation probably was trying to do it a little better, but they didn't get there. That's not to their fault - they just didn't have access to all that information.”

The Pineapple Lounge, the research, innovation & immersive experience experts for youth culture, has published an extensive global report Redefining Parenthood: The Pineapple Lounge’s New Report on GenZ Parents’ Global Perspectives highlighting how they are raising their children and how this differs hugely from previous generations.

Factors such as social media, Cost of Living, tech and environmental concerns are impacting how Generation Z (Zeds) are approaching parenting according to the extensive report.

In an era marked by global interconnectedness, Zeds are blending diverse cultural parenting practices while utilising the internet’s rich repository of insights to inform their parenting decisions. This blend of worldwide inspiration and analytical online resources is revolutionizing the contemporary parenting approach, moving away from traditional anecdotes towards more evidence-based strategies.
In contrast, Millennial parents, while also tech-savvy and open to global influences, navigated parenting with the transitional experience of pre-digital and digital worlds, often relying more on traditional community advice and initial online forums rather than the vast, specialised digital resources available today.

A Zed parent from the US, commented, We don’t want to do it the way that we were raised. We know that generation probably was trying to do it a little better, but they didn’t get there. That’s not to their fault – they just didn’t have access to all that information.”

Generation Z values learning outside of traditional classroom settings, placing a premium on practical skills such as financial literacy, cooking, hands-on repairs, and other trade-specific and social competencies that promote self-sufficiency in adulthood. In contrast, Millennial parents lean more towards nurturing confidence and creativity, rather than emphasizing practical “old-school” talents.

Another Zed Parent commented, “I don’t want my baby’s creativity to be killed by school; I don’t think that everything school teaches her is that important. For living, you must get to know how society works.”

The new generation of parents is being influenced by parenting styles they are seeing across the globe and from international music, art, film and fashion. Zed parents are taking inspiration from their peers in other countries and adopting international parenting techniques and best practices to help them raise their children with global awareness.

Riwanon Gestin, Joint MD of Strategy at The Pineapple Lounge, commented,
“We believe this report is so important as it is the first extensive study showing how Generation Z are raising their children and how different parenting has become in just one generation. The new generation of parents are utilising global resources to raise and educate their children them beyond the classroom.

We have been following Gen Z for over 12 years now and the way they parent is very much in line with how they have embraced life so far. Of course, there are many cultural differences and nuances but factors such as social media, Covid and the environmental crisis are amplifying some of these changes, and this is impacting how the next generation is being raised globally.”

Dee Cahill, Joint MD of Operations, added, “As a global agency we have interviewed parents from many countries and continents including China, UK, US, Germany, Nigeria, Brazil and India to get a truly worldwide perspective on how the next generation of parents are raising their children.”
