According to research conducted by psychiatrist, Dr Munidasa Winslow, who is founder of the Winslow Clinic located at the Novena Medical Center in Singapore, gaming addiction has over recent years developed into one of the world’s fastest growing addictions.
What is a gaming addiction? It is when you kid or teen spends hour after hour playing computer games while everything else in his life takes a backseat. Dr Winslow’s findings indicate that one in five students spend five hours or more each day immersed only in what is going happening on the screen, to a point that their studies and social life are neglected as well as time with the family. If that isn’t gaming addiction, then what is?
So, what can parents do to curb their kid’s gaming addiction? Here are five important tips on how parents can help their kids deal with their gaming addiction.
- Action: Parents must devise proactive steps and carry them out.
- Connection: Parents must spend quality time with their kids.
- Communication: Parents need to plan dinner dates or set aside time for special outings every week.
- Interaction: Parents must ensure their engagement with the child is not lost.
- Direction: Parents must regain control – reinforce ground rules.
