They call it a “House of Hope” and that’s exactly what it is for many hospice babies or those with terminal diagnoses.
They began their amazing act of generosity of opening up their home in Sheboygan, Michigan back in 2012. Applying her knowledge and experience as a former perinatal bereavement nurse, Cori is able to give these babies the emotional support they need.
Her years as a nurse taught her that her true passion was hospice care.
TODAY.com reports that many of the babies’ families can’t stand to witness them suffer so the Salchert’s home provides these babies with happy homes before they pass on.
Cori and her husband Mark have made it their life’s mission to care for as many babies as they can.
Their first ever hospice baby, Emmalynn, lived for only 50 days and passed away while Cori held her.
The beginning of her mission
Cori recounts to TODAY how her younger sister Amie contracted spinal meningitis when she was a baby. This left her mentally and physically handicapped and she was eventually sent to live in a home for kids with similar impairments.
One day, someone left the door unlocked and Amie found her way out of the home and found a pond, where she accidentally drowned.
She admits to questioning God for a long time. Carrying the hurt for years, she eventually found peace through her faith. Cori shares that God “redeemed her in ways beyond fathoming”.
