When you talk about holistic wellness, Body Inc. is one of the first names that comes to mind. The 15-year-old brand is a creation of former actress and entrepreneur Jacelyn Tay, who ventured into this space way before other brands could even fathom the potential of this segment.
The actress may not be gracing our television screens anymore but Jacelyn has been involved in a number of notable projects for over a decade.
Her entrepreneurial journey began with Body Inc. in 2006 and she has worked hard to build herself as a health coach and transform her venture into a powerhouse brand.
She’s also built an aspirational life in these years and is mother to her son, 10-year-old Zavier. Juggling between work commitments and her little one, she’s become an inspiration to working mums in Singapore and around the world.
But her journey has just begun and with each passing day, she is setting new precedence on parenting. Jacelyn’s parenting style is unique and brings friendship to the table instead of the conventional parent-child relationship.
She explains, “Usually, the way I talk to my kid is like, I will play a 10-year-old role, and then just be his friend, his best friend. I think that is the most effective way for me, at least, when I need to discipline him. He knows that it is out of love.”
The mum also believes in keeping her kids independent which only helps them learn from their mistakes. Sure, she is there but for guidance and not discipline.
In fact, Jacelyn does not even own a cane (and neither should you) to discipline her child. And maybe that makes all the difference.
Learning In The Time Of HBL And WFH
But the pandemic hasn’t been kind to this mum and son duo either.
Much like other working parents, Jacelyn too struggled with home-based learning (HBL) and quickly understood how it disrupted the normalcy in her home.
Sharing an anecdote, Jacelyn revealed how it was initially difficult to get the hardware in place – right from the computer to the WiFi to a printer to get Zavier’s online classes going.
And of course, HBL did overlap with Work From Home (WFH) and that meant several interrupted calls, screaming, knocking on the door, and more.
“I have to fix something. Just give me five minutes,” she’d say to her client, and then attend her child. It was stressful but manageable, describes Jacelyn.
Fortunately, the fact that Jacelyn spends more time at home makes this process more peaceful and open.
Without a maid, the mumpreneur has to deal with household chores on her own. So, her day is divided between household chores, her son and work.
”I realised that if I really want a very close relationship, and also, I have to make sure I understand why he does certain things this way. So for the last almost two and a half years, I had no helper and I was really hands-on, and I realised that it is very, very useful,” she says.
That being said, even in the pre-pandemic era, Jacelyn’s schedule was that she’d be in office during Zavier’s school hours in order to make sure they spent more time together at home.
With HBL and WFH though, the same hours are now divided by two rooms. The little one attends school in his room, while Jacelyn attends her meetings virtually. Interestingly, this has had quite an effect on Zavier who considers HBL as his work, where he’s the boss.
Start them early, we’d say!
Managing Screen Time With Zavier
But sitting in front of a screen for hours together has never been ideal and won’t be either.
It’s strenuous to the eye and only increases with other on-screen activities. Jacelyn did try different eye solutions packages for her child but with little luck.
“Initially, when Zavier started with a normal monitor, he started with only a laptop and I realised that was really small, and then it’s quite tiring for the eyes,” said Jacelyn.
“So after a day, he told me “oh Mama, actually, I feel very, very sleepy. I don’t know why.”
After all, children spend about six to eight hours every day in front of a monitor and that’s unavoidable screen time. That’s where the new BenQ’s eye care monitor steps in.
“I love the BenQ monitor because I find it so useful. It’s less strenuous. I actually sat there with him and look at the screen.”
It’s the newest addition to Jacelyn’s home (a genius hack!) and has helped Zavier ease the strain on his eyes.
As any concerned mum would be, Jacelyn tried the BenQ monitor herself and found it useful too. Her son does not like wearing spectacles that cut off blue light from screens, which makes the BenQ monitor a perfect addition.
It protects the eyes from the harmful blue light, allowing you to work comfortably for long hours.
BenQ first launched its low blue light, flicker-free monitor in 2013 and has since been one of the most important players in the segment.
The BenQ monitor comes with Brightness Intelligence (B.I), which is BenQ’s unique technology allowing the monitor to adjust brightness level automatically according to the ambient light, so children’s eye strain can be significantly relieved.
Besides, there is also a height adjustment function that ensures users to set the monitor to the right viewing angle and distance to avoid being short-sighted.
Jacelyn says, “The laptop is very tough because when you use a laptop you know I have to stack it up”
“I don’t think the laptop is good for kids. It’s very bad for the shoulders, really bad. And being adjustable for the monitor, it’s definitely a plus point for us. “

Investing In Eye Care With the BenQ Monitor And ScreenBar
With multiple screens in her peripheral view at all times, escaping screen time is next to impossible for Jacelyn.
As a consultant, keeping note is important, so Jacelyn needs sufficient light to work, but a lamp takes quite much space on the table.
“If we put a table lamp on the table with that laptop, with the monitor, and then plus his homework, and the books and stationeries, it’s like, the table is so full. So with a ScreenBar, it’s really useful. ”
With a patented design, ScreenBar can be installed on any monitors (except for some curved monitors) easily without consuming any space!
Originally invented by BenQ, ScreenBar covers 15 levels of brightness and 8 levels of color temperature for you choice.
In the past few years, ScreenBar is widely described as a game changer, not only because it’s space saving, but also it’s auto-dimming and anti-glare feature.
Thanks to the built-in light sensor, ScreenBar can maintain 500 Lux brightness level on the working area according to the ambient light, in the meanwhile, ScreenBar won’t cause any glare on the screen because of the asymmetrical Optical Design so that parents and kids can avoid eye strain.

The BenQ eye care solutions package has also shown its effects. Zavier isn’t complaining anymore about being tired, nor do his eyes look bloodshot red.
For Jacelyn, she says the most obvious change is that she does not feel too tired anymore after long hours in front of the screen.
“It’s very easy to set up the entire thing. And that’s important because I have no one to help and I’m the one who has to set up everything.”
Sometimes, a basic change can make all the difference for a better experience. That’s exactly what Jacelyn and Zavier found out with the BenQ eye care ScreenBar.
