The monsoon season is here and with heavy rainfall pouring across the island, flooding in various parts of Singapore has become commonplace. While weather forecasts warn of thundery showers for the rest of August, some children are shedding light on the news through an adorable video.
On 24 August, a video of Preschoolers in Telok Blangah watching water cascading down a staircase right outside their classroom window, went viral.
Flooded Staircase Catches The Attention Of Children In Preschool
In the video taken by someone at Appleland Playhouse, water can be seen coming down a narrow staircase due to the heavy rain pouring outside. The small waterfall on the staircase was also flowing over circular steps at the bottom.
While it does sound dangerous, it is important to point out that the children were safely indoors during the entire ordeal.
They were watching the water flow over the big windows of the room and were letting out a chorus of "wah" in unison. As they were left amazed by the sight of the "waterfall staircase," it made for a pretty endearing video.
Despite the heavy rainfall directly on to the staircase, the steps were left relatively dry as the most of the water flowed into a drain at the edge of the walkway.
Keeping Kids Safe During Flash Flooding In Singapore
With heavy rains causing flooding in many areas of Singapore, it's best to know how to be better prepared yourself and the kids. Here are some flood safety tips to take note of:
- Communicate with your kids. Don't leave your kids uninformed. Let them know about your evacuation plans and tell them what to expect from the floods.
- Keep your bags ready. Have a few bags packed with the important possessions around your home and an emergency kit.
- If advised, evacuate immediately. When local authorities announce that you should evacuate your homes, do so without question and keep your kids informed of your plans to avoid panic. The same goes for when advised to move to higher floors to avoid the flood.
- Turn and plug off all electrical items. Ensure that you have disconnected all electrical appliances to avoid any short circuit accidents.
- Keep away from roads. It is best not to drive while there is flooding in Singapore. It is possible that your car could start flooding itself or even worse, start short-circuiting.
