Mummies, giving birth once or twice may seem already too much for a lifetime. Especially here in Singapore with the rising costs and the busy lifestyle. It is very rare to find parents with more than three children.
However, on the other side of the world, things seem to be different.
Guinness World Records: Wife of Russian Peasant Feodor Vassilyev
The Guinness World Records has announced an unknown Russian woman as it’s “Most Prolific Mother Ever”. She is known to give birth to 69 children over her lifetime. Mrs. Vassilyev, who was the first wife of Russian peasant Feodor Vassilyev, was born in 1707 and was a peasant from the third biggest town in Russia known as Shuya. According to official reports, during her confinement, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.
Mrs. Vassileyv’s staggering number of births was first reported by the Monastry of Nikolsk on 27 February 1782 and in the Gentlemen’s Magazine in 1783. Despite these records, the case has received a lot of flak and uncertainty from the internet claiming it is impossible. This is mainly because during that period a lot of children died in their infancy.
However, The Guinness World Records defended her records by debunking the myth that a woman cannot have so many children. They noted that it is possible that Mrs. Vassileyv had a predisposition to hyper ovulate or release multiple eggs in a single cycle. This massively increases the chance of having twins or multiple children which is what happened in Mrs. Vassileyv’s case. The quirky record book also said it is not impossible for a woman to have 27 pregnancies during her fertile years.
Apart from this, there is not much information about Mrs. Vassileyv. Some sources claim her full name was Valentina Vassilyev and she was thought to live until the age of 76.
