Ex-principal exploited school funds

A RETIRED school principal was charged with 20 counts of misappropriating funds from the school and one of simple criminal breach of trust totalling $148,540 over a six-year period.

Anthony Tan Kim Hock, 64, was principal of Maris Stella High School when he allegedly misappropriated $44,861 from mainly the school management committee account 13 times to pay for a relative’s overseas school trips, coaching, and professional tennis registry renewal fees, among others.

Tan allegedly pocketed donations and funds in the school chapel building fund totalling $103,679 at the Mount Vernon Road School.

Tan, who retired in December 2009, was represented by Dr Koh Hai Keong.

If convicted of offences before February 2008, he faces a jail term of up to seven years and fine on each charge. Offences after that date carry a jail term of up to 15 years and fine each.

He is out on police bail of $40,000. He will appear in court again on June 16.
