A Serendipitous Encounter: Son Receives Education Award
It all began when Shanmugam attended an Education Merit Award Ceremony at Chong Pang on April 29, 2023. During the event, he presented an award to Eben Yong, a 9-year-old student from Yishun Primary School. Little did he know that this encounter would unfold as a heartwarming coincidence.
A Throwback Photo Brings Nostalgia
Shortly after the ceremony, Eben's mother, Sharon, approached Shanmugam with an old photograph from 1996. The photo captured a young Sharon receiving an Edusave Scholarship award from none other than Shanmugam himself. The realization of this connection left everyone amazed.
Reflecting on this incredible coincidence, Shanmugam shared, "I was the MP for Chong Pang, and Sharon was a Secondary One student at Naval Base Secondary School. Twenty-seven years later, it was now her son receiving an education award from me." The moment was filled with nostalgia and a sense of unity.
Shanmugam also highlighted Sharon's deep-rooted ties to Nee Soon, as she has been a resident for over 35 years, since her childhood. He expressed his happiness that Sharon chose to build her family in the same community and wished them the very best.
