Are you looking for a school for your little one? Check out the top preschools in Singapore, based on their approach, curriculum and parents’ recommendations.
Many Singaporean parents relate to the struggle of choosing the perfect preschool for their kids. School in Singapore is not compulsory until Primary 1 for seven-year-old children. However, 99% of children are already attending preschools before Primary 1.
Preschool is for children around ages 3 to 5 and it establishes their foundation for development. Essentially, it is their first step out of their ‘homely comfort zone’. This is why, as parents, you’ll go the extra mile to choose from the best preschools Singapore has to offer.
Preschool sets the foundation for learning and growth at an early stage in life and it is important that the foundation built is a solid one.
Preschool is a safe and fun place where kids interact with one another, honing social skills such as learning to share (although not so much in the COVID pandemic), being considerate, and so on.
Basic academic skills like spelling are also being taught. Exploration of curiosity and creativity is highly encouraged during this time, which is vital for learning in subsequent stages of education.
Preschool in Singapore: What to Expect When Your Child Starts
Preschool is the time when children have fun and learn through active play. There is a wide range of activities offered in preschools that nurture their holistic growth. Some of these activities include:
Arts and crafts
This is a good way for kids to express their creativity through various media.
There is no wrong or right artwork and kids learn to appreciate art as a form of creative expression. It could improve fine motor skills as well.
Science experiments
Cool science experiments can pique the interests of children, which help in developing critical thinking.
Demonstrations, followed by hands-on activities, is one of the best ways for children to explore their curiosities.
Physical play
Physical activity is proven to be beneficial for a growing child. It helps increase the ossification of bones, develop fundamental motor skills, and improve muscle memory.
Learning musical instruments
Music is highly recognised as one of the best means for brain development.
Research has shown that learning music at an early age provides a positive impact on children’s overall well-being and improves learning too!
Language acquisition through song, dance, etc.
Combining language and music proves very effective for young children’s learning. Providing a fun-filled atmosphere for children promotes learning rates.
Most preschools share similar concepts of how a young student should be nurtured. To be creative, curious, innovative and morally grounded.
At the same time, different preschools use different pedagogies to promote learning.
Each pedagogy has its unique points. Just to name a few, we have:
- Reggio-Emilia approach – Students have a certain level of freedom in deciding what they are interested in and pursuing those interests.
Educators often create projects based on these interests to kindle the children’s curiosity. Projects help children to hone their collaborative skills and connect with others.
- Montessori method – Another student-centric pedagogy, the Montessori method’s objectives are similar to the Reggio-Emilia approach.
The difference lies in that it has an additional consideration of the young mind being like a sponge, absorbent and quick to pick up on things.
Auto-learning takes place and the educator is simply there to facilitate the activities with less intervention while the children are allowed to complete the tasks head-on.
- STEM-based method – STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Although it is relatively new, it is gaining popularity in the education system.
Some may argue that it may be too difficult for the young kids, but think about it, doesn’t building a structure from LEGO blocks rely on these principles too?
- Waldorf-Steiner education – This method follows the framework of engaging the head, heart and hands: thinking, feeling and doing.
Essentially, this methodology reflects upon the children’s thoughts, feelings and actions to inculcate critical thinking, imagination, and action.
Criteria to Consider When Looking At Preschools Singapore Offers
There are many things to consider when searching for the best preschool for your child but we are here to help you break down the main points you would be looking for in a good preschool.
Here are some of them listed below:
Safe environment for learning
Children at this stage are taking their first big step out of their comfort zone so it is crucial for the children to have a learning environment where they feel safe in expressing their ideas and positivity.
Inclusivity for children coming from all backgrounds
Diversity amongst students is key when teaching children social skills. It is important to emphasize good social behaviour through educators’ role-modelling.
School fees
While ensuring your child attains quality education, blowing a hole in your wallet is not ideal. It is best to strike a balance and find a preschool that offers a quality education at an affordable price.
Location: distance and accessibility from home
The journey to school shouldn’t be an arduous one. Instead, kids should be looking forward to school and it would greatly help if the preschool is conveniently located with easy accessibility.
It means more sleep for both caretakers and children too!
Facilities and activities offered
Having well-maintained, safe and clean facilities can drastically increase the quality of play and learning as it reduces the risk of injuries and illness.
Activities monitored diligently by educators can also play a role in keeping children safe, healthy, and happy.
Teacher-to-child ratio
A smaller ratio can prove beneficial for the children’s learning as the teacher is able to give more attention per student.

My First Skool at 49 Rivervale Crescent has a very dedicated team who is sincere in providing safe and fun learn-through-play environment for the children.
The children are exposed to a wide range of activities carefully planned by the teachers to not just tackle various developmental milestones, but also keep the children continuously excited for school. As parents, we look forward to receiving the weekly updates on the Parents Portal prepared by the teachers. These pictorial updates are always accompanied by a detailed explanation of each activity done in the week — love this!
The non-teaching team members are also a breeze to partner with. Everyone from executive principal to clerical officers is easily reached, and our concerns are always addressed promptly.

My daughter was with My First Skool at 63 Telok Blangah Heights for 5 years until K2. We were very happy that she had a smooth transition to P1 without difficulties. The school taught her well and now being in Primary school, her form teacher had commented that she is very vocal and takes initiative in everything. Very big thanks to MFS for this! We would strongly recommend this centre as the teachers are very helpful and most importantly, my child’s nutrition was always well taken care of with freshly made meals in their on-site kitchen!

Parent Reviews:
Nurturing Teachers and Amazing Hygiene Standard – As parents, we were always concerned about our daughter’s well-being in school, especially during the pandemic. But our worry was unfounded as the teachers and staff at Josiah Aperia have gone above and beyond to teach and care for Nur Imaan. We were given constant updates regarding ongoing cases, cleaning and sanitation and her progress in school.
During her time there, Nur Imaan has made many friends, gained confidence, and learned a multitude of skills that we are left impressed with every single day, all thanks to the high standard curriculum set by the school.
We appreciate that while it must’ve been challenging, the teachers at Josiah Aperia never fail to greet us with a smile every day. Thank you for all the patience, love and care you have shown to Nur Imaan. You have made a huge impact in not only her life but ours as well.
– Nur Rein & Ahmad Muhammad, Parent of Nur Imaan Azzahra
Personal, Dedicated and Caring Educators – Josiah has been a wonderful preschool with very personal, dedicated and caring staff. When we had to look for a new school for Manas in 2019 we didn’t think twice about enrolling him back to Josiah after a fantastic experience in 2016.
Through the teacher’s guidance and perfectly structured activities, we have watched Manas’ confidence grow and develop important social skills that he will need as he progresses through his next schooling phase.
The school’s involvement during the COVID-19 circuit Breaker and preparedness for HBL within the short span was commendable.
A rightly balanced syllabus with extra-curricular activities and friendly, nurturing, professional staff has made our experience with Josiah wonderful. We cannot thank the staff enough for this amazing journey for Manas.

Parent Reviews:
Stamford American has been more than awesome in its educational experiences, cultural exposure, focus on social-emotional management, and well-planned units of inquiry. The teachers, staffers, specialised subject teachers, and extracurricular activities are responsive, comprehensive and quick to respond.
The only downside is perhaps that we have been provided with so many options we wished we had more time for them! The musicals, parent seminars, parent info sessions, curriculum presentations, the list goes on.
One thing I would recommend is that because the early years are on a separate campus, and if you have kids across different campuses, living close to the main Woodleigh Campus will help immensely, as they offer a shuttle from the Woodleigh campus to the early year’s campus (but not the other way round due to different starting times)
– Jessie Hou
This school is an absolutely great place for education and sports. The facilities are great, and the staff is very experienced and well-trained. All the experiences are good since the child went to school at Stamford; he has really changed a lot in the two years.
Thanks to all my child’s teachers, they are very supportive and kind; at the same time, their past learning experiences and current achievements are inspiring the kid to grow up; they are role models for him, so I will never forget this learning experience.
Thanks again to all the teachers of the school, will them all good luck and happiness.

LEARNING REIMAGINED
Inquiry-Embedded Play Approach
This teaching approach is central to The Schoolhouse philosophy, with the belief that play is a natural learning environment for children. It begins with children wondering about something interesting or intriguing on a curriculum content, thereafter, forming questions and pursuing meaningful investigations with teachers’ facilitation to explore the answers.
Subscribing to the constructivist approach on play, The Schoolhouse’s approach carefully revolves around planning intentional, meaningful and thought-provoking inquiry-embedded play-based learning experiences to support children’s holistic development.
Global Connected Citizens
Through our thoughtfully designed programmes, our children are raised to have the skillsets needed to thrive in the 21st century – Critical and Inventive Thinking, Civic Literacy, Global Awareness, and Cross-Cultural Skills.
Our Real-World programmes focus on enabling children to master communication and arithmetic skillsets and their real-world applications. We raise our children to be Imagineers who embark on a journey of discovering various science and art themes that accentuate their creativity. In an environment that embraces nature and sustainability, our well-informed Changemakers will be challenged to be involved in initiatives that make an impact on our world. The Eat the World programme is an immersive mealtime experience that introduces children to diverse cuisines, while promoting healthy eating habits and teaching important skills such as sharing and cleaning up.
Award-winning Bilingual Immersion Core Curriculum
Both the English and Mandarin teachers are co-partners in the same classroom, co-owning the holistic development of children under their care. The co-teachers create the teaching plan together to incorporate and deliver themes, subjects and topics in a cohesive and immersive bilingual environment. This arrangement surrounds children with equal amount of exposure to English and Mandarin, facilitating language acquisition at a very young age as they are encouraged to interact within context throughout the day.

Children are exposed to music via songs, stories, rhymes, games, movement and the playing of percussion instruments by our in-house music specialists, certified in the Orff-Schulwerk teaching approach. With their support, all Schoolhouse’ co-teachers are also equipped with basic music skills to help them engage children through music for every learning experience. Parent Reviews:
It is true to what it described itself to be, more than a preschool, to both my children who grew up with The Schoolhouse since they were both six months of age.
It has been 3 years since my elder child graduated from The Schoolhouse, but she would still tell me those years she spent with TSH were the most fun years of her life. She holds fond memories of the teachers who patiently taught, nurtured and guided her.
My younger child will be graduating from TSH end of this year, which saddens me to think that we will be parting with a team of teachers who are like family to my children. Looking back, entrusting my children with TSH was the best decision made as a parent!

Particularly Ms Jolthe longstanding curriculum seniors teaching within the school, Ms Sandy, the admin ladies and principal Ms Euphemia Png who make TSH Katong a loving, homely, positive and respectful place for everyone to come to daily and thrive.

We, as parents, are deeply grateful for your warm encouragement and thoughtful guidance behind every little step in Bao Yu’s development, such as this little adventure into business and many others during his time in Odyssey.
It is a testimony of Odyssey’s core value of putting children first. Bao Yu and I will undoubtedly miss this wonderful time at the school soon!

Thank you, teachers. It is so beautiful to see how you nurture each child. You have made Leo feel comfortable by giving him the opportunity to do things he loves, “music and movement", and then also pushed him outside his comfort zone to try new things “eating watermelon".
No part of your job is easy, but you make it seem all so smooth and simple. Thank You for all that you do and for all the caring, loving and learning. We are so glad to have this chance for Leo.

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the valuable lessons and education you have provided my child, Aalif Ali, from PG to K2 this past year.
Your passion for teaching has been evident from day one, and your enthusiasm has made learning that much more fun. Your friendly and patient nature with the K2 children is commendable and outstanding.
My child has truly flourished under your guidance and has come out of the school year a much more confident and motivated person.
You have been a great mentor to my child, as I know it’s not easy to handle small children, and we are so thankful for everything you have done to make Aalif comfortable and look forward to going to kindergarten.
Your ability to engage students in learning is unparalleled, and I am sure you will continue to inspire many generations of young minds. Thanks again for being such a wonderful teacher.
In the quiet of the classroom, amidst the sound of pencils and crayons, Stands a beacon of wisdom on whom our future depends. Teachers, our guiding stars, through thick and thin,
Lighting up our paths, helping dreams begin. I wish you all the best, teacher Sorfina, in all your future endeavours. Aalif will miss you a lot but will carry your valuable lessons with him to primary school, and we will visit you again next year!

Parent Reviews:
LEX program was my girl’s first non-parent accompanied class. The teachers are very caring, so she has adapted quickly and loves going to school.
The programme is so interesting, with a different theme each week. She keeps asking when she is going to Lorna Whiston.
– Carmen C Parent of Asenath
We chose Lorna Whiston Preschools because Lorna Whiston has a very strong bilingual element to it. There is a Chinese and English teacher at all times. The Individual Reading Programme instilled a love of reading in my daughter.
It really surprises me when she comes home and says she really likes to read and she likes her homework. So Lorna Whiston must be doing something great!

Parent Reviews:
We enrolled our son here since he was 18 months old and have nothing but praise for the dedication and passion of the principal and her team. From what we observed, the children are very well taken care of, and the curriculum is holistic, as evidenced by our son’s development.
Every member of the staff, from teachers to support staff, presents themselves professionally and, at the same time, are also warm and authentic in their interactions. Having our son spend his formative years in Etonhouse 223 is one of the best decisions we have ever made.

Really have to highlight that I got the most impeccable service from Rachel and Parames from the Katong village branch.
I had very difficult requests, and both of them very sincerely and patiently helped me with them. This says so much about how they will take good care of their students as well.
