Yesterday, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) issued an alert related to Dumex Mamil Gold infant milk formula, Stage 1, 850g. They recalled this formula milk following detection of the Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria in two sampled tins of the milk powder.
Today (21 August), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) and National University Hospital (NUH) used recalled Dumex contaminated formula.

Dumex Contaminated Formula Possibly Given to Infants
In a statement, the MOH says that both hospitals may have given contaminated milk to infants admitted between August 1 and August 20. They were all below six months of age. Both KKH and NUH are contacting all parents and caregivers of these infants to advise them about next steps.
The ministry also says, “MOH has advised all public and private paediatrics hospitals to cease the use of the implicated product, and to notify MOH of suspected cases. We are closely monitoring the situation.”
Why is a Cronobacter Infection Potentially Dangerous for Young Babies?
Cronobacter sakazakii is commonly found in the environment and generally, is not harmful to adults. But this is not the case for very young babies.
This is because this bacteria can cause sepsis (blood infection) and meningitis (infection of the brain and spine) in newborns and infants, cautions AVA.
“Infants two months of age and younger are most likely to develop meningitis if they get sick with Cronobacter,” says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
First symptoms of a Cronobacter infection in infants are: fever, crying, poor feeding, lethargy, and sometimes, seizures.
“The incubation period ranges from four to nine days, but could stretch up to 21 days,” reports Channel NewsAsia.
It is possible to treat the infection with antibiotics. This is why you MUST see a paediatrician immediately if you notice any of these symptoms in your baby.
Dumex Mamil Gold Infant Formula Recall: Important Information for Parents
According to AVA and a statement by Dumex:
- The batch number of the contaminated products is 09117R1.
- You can check the batch number which is engraved at the bottom of the milk tin.
- The expiry date of the affected products is September 11, 2019.
- The affected products were made in Malaysia.
AVA directed Danone Dumex, the importer of this formula to Singapore, to recall the affected batch immediately. Reportedly, the recall is complete.
