How severe is the problem of drug trafficking in Singapore? In a recent crackdown on drugs, anti narcotics officers managed to arrest 5 suspected drug abusers and traffickers.
They also rescued a 1-year-old baby.
Drug trafficking in Singapore: Little baby rescued
According to The Straits Times, clues about the baby emerged when Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers nabbed a Singaporean woman near Farrer Park MRT on Feb 26, 2018.
In her possession was found a bag containing about 195g of heroin and 27g of methamphetamine, or Ice. Later, another 20 Ecstasy tablets and a small amount of heroin and Ice were recovered from her hideout near Roberts Lane.
It was through this woman’s phone messages that officers came to know of the baby. She later confessed that she was the caregiver of a 1-year-old baby boy.
CNB officers then sought the help of the police to help find and rescue the baby.
Drug traffickers nabbed
The next day, officers nabbed a man and 3 women, all suspected drug traffickers, from a hotel at Joo Chiat. The baby was with the man.
A whopping 640g of heroin was seized, and apparently, the drugs were left out in the open.
Another suspected drug trafficker was arrested in his home in Rivervale Drive. All suspects are Singaporeans and investigations are going on.
The baby has now been handed over to the Child Protective Service of the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Apparently, authorities are trying to find his mother, who is also wanted for drug offences.
It is really sad to know that the baby’s mother had abandoned him and left him in the care of these drug traffickers.
Mr Sng Chern Hong, director of CNB’s communications division, has been quoted as saying that, the case “clearly highlights the adverse consequences of drugs”.
“The toddler was abandoned by his biological mother and left in the care of a suspected drug trafficker. It was fortunate that our officers were successful in locating the toddler and prevented further harm from being caused to him,” he said.
