What happens when someone in the family catches Covid-19? So many questions are up in the air if this situation ever occurs. The number one question is who is going to take care of who?
As much as we want to protect them from everything bad that is happening around us, our children should also be armed with the information they need to take care of themselves and to contribute to the family’s overall wellbeing.
In line with this, the Ministry of Health (MOH) collaborated with an author, paediatrician and an illustrator to come up with an eBook that will help children understand what is happening better.
What To Do If I Am Covid Positive?
“Our Ministry of Health Singapore approached Josef Lee and me to help produce a new e-book on MOH’s latest efforts and health protocols.I also sought the perspective of paediatrician Dr Darryl Lim, who helms a team of doctors helping in a voluntary telemedicine initiative in support of Covid positive children with mild symptoms recovering at home,” said the author.
The 37-page e-book was produced, made primarily for and simplified for the level of understanding that children have.
Educating kids, parents and caregivers
It is very evident that their goal is to really have children be informed and knowledgeable on the covid variants. It is definitely high time that children learn and be up to date with the virus we are currently facing causing a global pandemic.
“With Covid cases rising and so much news in the press of people rushing to A&E and the preschool community struggling with Covid measures, we wanted to get this into the hands of parents, caregivers and doctors caring for Covid positive kids speedily,” said Lim-Leh.
Kids should not only be aware of the coronavirus but also have the right information on how to deal with the said virus.
The author fondly shares,
“I hope that we will ride out the Omicron wave soon and Singapore can gradually ease towards living with Covid as an endemic.”
This e-book that features multicultural characters is a sequel to the first book they have released with MOH entitled, “I Can Recover At Home” which was released late last year.
“The e-book provides parents and guardians of twelve years olds and below a reassuring and handy guide to Singapore’s Ministry of Health’s efforts as we learn to live with Covid,” she added.
What To Do If I Am Covid Positive starts with a young girl experiencing a mild fever and revolves around the steps they took to ensure the whole family is protected from the disease. The information in the book was based on Singapore’s Living with Covid website.
“Parents and kids will be able to identify with this scenario,” says Dr Darryl Lim, the paediatrician consulted in the making of this Covid e-book for children. “Some of them may feel discouraged with a repeatedly positive ART (antigen rapid test) result every day – to them, it’s like continually passing or failing a test. So, even though we want to keep Covid-19-negative family members safe, parents have had to step in to sayang the kids and bolster their mood,” he adds.
Aside from presenting important information in a way children will understand and appreciate, the eBook also teaches kids to be alert and not to panic when they experience symptoms. This book will definitely help your child prepare in case a similar scenario comes up in real life.
