[Updated 28 April] Singapore reported coronavirus-related deaths involving two senior citizens from COVID-19 complications on Monday (27 April). It brings the total number of such deaths here in Singapore to 14.
According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), both patients, cases 1595 and 9682 are male Singapore citizens in their 80s.
Coronavirus-related Deaths
Case 1592 was an 82-year-old male Singapore Citizen who was confirmed to have COVID-19 infection on 8 April, while case 9682 was an 81-year-old male Singapore Citizen, who was confirmed to have COVID-19 infection on 20 April.
Both patients were confined at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and died from complications due to COVID-19 on Monday.
MOH said NCID has reached out to their families and is extending assistance to them.
It is said that seven new clusters have been identified, including Acacia Home, an assisted living facility located at 30 Admiralty Street.
12 residents of Acacia Home and two of its staff have tested positive for COVID-19 in results confirmed earlier today.
On Saturday, 25 April, a 62-year-old male resident had also been tested positive. A total of 15 people have since been warded at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
Those who were tested negative for COVID-19 in Acacia Home, including residents and staff, have been placed on quarantine.
Unusual Symptoms of COVID-19 In Infected Elderly
Unlike usual coronavirus symptoms such as fever, persistent coughing or shortness of breath, elderly people could exhibit none of these symptoms, studies suggest. On the other hand, they can also exhibit unusual symptoms such as sleeping more than usual, losing orientation to surroundings and becoming dizzy and falling down.
Authors of the study attribute these unusual symptoms to elderly people's weakened immune response to illnesses and infections.
Total Number Of Cases In Singapore
Meanwhile, 799 new cases COVID-19 infection in Singapore today (27 April).
Out of these, 14 cases are made up of Singaporean and Permanent Residents, MOH confirmed. The vast majority of other cases consist of work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories.
This brings the total number of cases to 14,423.
35 more cases of COVID-19 infection have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities. To date, 1,060 patients have fully recovered from the virus infection and have been discharged.
There are currently 1,451 confirmed cases who are still in hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving, and 20 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
