China’s Health Ministry has launched a 10-day emergency crackdown operation for all tainted milk products in 16 provinces. KSWO-TV News reported that despite the massive milk scandal that rocked the country in 2008, many were still found in the market recently. Apparently, some tainted milk products that were recalled two years ago weren’t destroyed but were just repackaged, so they’re now back in the shelves.
In 2008, six children have died while 300,000 became ill because of melamine that was found in various milk products. Melamine is a chemical that is used to make plastic and fertilizer so it obviously has adverse effects on humans. But in their desire to make more profits, manufacturers added this chemical into watered-down milk to fool inspectors testing for protein content.
Chinese health authorities promise to track down and destroy every melamine-tainted milk products in the market. However, they admit that doing their task won’t really be easy as development and integrity among manufacturing companies are not equal. So just to be safe, refrain from buying any milk products coming from China. If you have any China-made milk products, immediately discard or destroy them.
