Aimed at 7 -12 year olds, the five and a half day Catch The Wave camp was a blast. The camp, held at St. Hildas’ Primary School included a one overnight residential stay. The camp inculcated CHAMP values, which stand for Confidence, Honour, A+ Attitude, Marvelous Mindset, Patience & Perseverance respectively.

The camp aimed to get students to learn various life skills such as confidence building, speaking with clarity and confidence, alleviating their peers’ self-esteem as well as their own, setting their own goals, spreading kindness, and showing empathy to others.

Curriculum Specialist Felisa Fernandez explained that “all the five days have different themes, the first theme is on self awareness, followed by ‘paying it forward’, which is kindness, the third is on effective communication, next up is managing challenges such as peer pressure or exam stress, and the last theme is the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”

The first day, which had a theme of self-awareness, had kids creating team cheer and banner, the lessons included workshops on how to manage emotional wellbeing. On the second day, with the theme of paying it forward, campers had to perform a random act of kindness by giving self written kindness cards to people in a shopping centre. The third, which emphasized effective communication, the kids had an ‘Art of Presentation’ workshop as well as a story creation session. Managing challenges was the theme on the fourth day, and it had kids discussing ways to cope with exam anxiety and sibling rivalry. They also had a wonderful opportunity to choreograph their very own dance performance with their team mates.

The last day was different from the rest as it included an overnight residential stay. Over the course of the night, each team presented their cheers, songs and dance items. The campers went for a nature walk and were also presented with their certificate of achievement to commemorate their efforts throughout the camp.

In between all the lessons and learning moments, the kids also enjoyed tons of team games including Balloon Tower Building, Caterpillar Race, Amazing Maze and many other activities.
