One such condition is radial clubhand, a deformity or birth defect that results in the forearm being perpendicular to the wrist.
Ean's Journey: Overcoming Challenges with Tenacity
Born with a radial clubhand, Ean Chan Yi An had to undergo therapy at a young age to learn basic skills like holding a pencil. Despite his initial struggles, Ean has seized every opportunity to learn and grow.
He participated in floorball competitions, learned to play the guitar, and performed during Teachers’ Day celebrations at Park View Primary School.
Ean's journey is a testament to the fact that physical limitations do not define one's abilities or potential. His neat and tidy handwriting, especially when writing intricate Chinese characters, is proof of his persistence and determination.
Education System: Supporting Students With Birth Defects
Ean joined the 38,088 students who sat for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) this year. Impressively, 98.4% of them moved on to secondary school. This success shows how supportive and inclusive Singapore's education system is, which keeps improving to meet the varied needs of all students.
Next up, the Ministry of Education has plans to shake things up from next year. They're going to introduce full subject-based banding in secondary schools, doing away with the existing streams. With this new approach, students will have the chance to study subjects at three academic levels. This will be based on their skills and grades, giving each student a fair shot at success.
Looking Towards the Future: Embracing Differences
Ean's story is more than just about overcoming a birth defect; it's about accepting differences and turning them into strengths. His parents taught him how to respond to curious onlookers with a smile, emphasizing that it's perfectly okay to be different.
In addition, Ean's journey shines as a ray of hope and inspiration for many other children born with birth defects and their families. It instils the belief that every problem has a solution, and with firm determination and the right support, any obstacle can be tackled.
